I just signed up for DTV. (I currently have DISH.) I was getting
confused when they were explaining the packages to me. From what I
understand, I'm getting 20 more channels, with the DVR fee waived for a
few months, for $40/month whereas if I went for the $42/month package,
I'd also pay the $6/month DVR fee from the start, with 20 less
channels. Was this some new deal I just got? (Only one I heard of was
the NFL thing -- if you signed up for ALL the channels for a year, or
something.) Or will I be paying for something I don't realize yet? (I
had to get it through DTV itself, because I was a costumer a few years
ago, and, apparently, other retailers can't give me any deals unless I
have a second phone # in my house.)

DirecTV usually allows you to get all the channels for a price lower than the standard package as an intro. They also will add at least two premiums like HBO or the like. It lasts about 30-90 days and then you start getting billed at the regular rate.
