Phone Lines |
|
|
I am looking into purchasing a satellite tv system, however I was
disappointed when I was made aware that a land phone line is required
when purchasing a DVR system. Everyone in my house has a cell phone,
so there is no need for a land line, and the cost of paying for one
just to watch satellite television is not cost effective. Does anyone
know a way around this? Is it something they tell you you "must need"
but in reality you don't? I'm not planningy on watching any
pay-per-view, so I don't see any reason why you have to have it. Any
info on this would be great. Thanks! |

I have had a dbs system for several years and it was connected to the phone
line until a thunderstorm did something nasty to the receiver and made the
phone line permanently off-hook. I disconnected it, probably about two
years ago, and have had no problems.

You only need a phone line if you want Pay Per View shows. |

You also need a phone line if you have active sports package
subscriptions. This is to enforce blackout rules when necessary and to
authorize your receiver to receive signals that are supposed to be in
effect in your area.If you try and do it without a phone line, they will
be blacked out no matter where you are or what the sport is.If you are
not into sports, then this is not a requirement. |

I use DISH and have a HD receiver. No phone line is required.
However, I do not use any pay per view or sports.... I just
watch whatever's on for free.....
Also, RVs which have sat TVs often don't use a phone line.....
Often the contract will say that " any receiver not permanently
connected to a phone line will be charged $5 more a month".
The DISH people told me to forget about it.........

Yes you need a land line for the DVR to work properly. It downloads it's info for recordeing at 2 a.m. using the dial in number.
However, it will operate for two weeks to one month if you take it to a place with a phone line and allow it to download. The place with the land line need not have service as you are only setting the dial out info for the receiver. _________________ Rock and roll is like sex, if the neighbors can't hear it- why bother? |

As you suspected the main purpose for phone lines is to generate PPV billing, but it also has
to do with the caller ID function on the IRD, a Home Service Provider
is contracted through DTV to install phone lines on all installs, however
if you refuse phone lines he can have that notated through his office
and the install completed without phone lines. but keep in mind if you
do utilize your remote to order a PPV, after 10 events it will lock you
out of any further PPV events, and when you finally do install a phone
line the Program Provider will automatically generate a bill for the
10 events you previously watched. I hope this info helps. |
