Where to learn about Sat Technology |
|
|
I'm a new guy on the block. I am former electronic tech so I have a good
basic technical knowledge BUT I have been out of the tech field for many
years. Is there someplace on the web where I can learn a bit more about
satellite TV technology.
For example: what TV satellite birds are up there?, what are their
footprints? who do they serve? Technical differences between Direct TV, Dish
and some of the other services such as Bell Express-VU and Star Choice in
Canada etc.
My wife is Colombian. We know a Colombian restaurant in Canada where they
receive TV from Bogotá. We would like to be able to do the same. (Of course
in Canada receiving foreign satellite programming is now illegal. Sort of
like North Korea.)

I don't think all foreign signals are illegal in Canada. There are many
to be found on Ku Band and C band called Free to Air (FTA) which are easily
and fairly easy to receive for about $400 or less. Look at www.lyngsat.com
to see what is up there. Equipment can be bought from these excellent guys
in Montreal if you decide to go ahead.
http://www.kusat.com/go.php?path=/intro.php The site also has good
information on setting up etc.
Enjoy! It's fun.

Lyngsat is great for information on what is available. For Columbia look at
http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/Colombia.html I hope something there will
meet your needs. There are lots of other South American channels as well.
Look at http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Channels/Free-TV.htm

I checked the first page I sent you and see that many of the channels are on
satellites that I cannot get in Canada, probably because they are aimed at
South America. Some are available here though and several are on C band and
not Ku Band. C band needs a much bigger dish. Mine is 8 ft diameter and
works fine. I have never tried but have read somewhere that 6 ft dishes can
be used. Despite all this a bit of diligent Googling and checking of the
many Lyngsat pages should allow you to figure what you need to get what you
want. I found Lyngsat pages a bit hard to understand at first but am
getting to know the lingo a bit better as I keep looking around.
