NZ Noob with new Atom |
|
|
http://www.satmax.ws/images/Atom.jpg
That's the box I've got (Sat Max sticker on the bottom, three LMBs), but I'm
new to this game. A local electronics shop has installed it for me...
I'm in Central Otago, and at the moment there are about 40+ channels loaded,
though many report bad signal.
I'm just wondering what are the possibilities of this setup? Can I find
channels and enter them manually...? If I do a search, will it stuff up the
current channel setup?
I'd like to get a news channel, something like BBC or CNN - would this be
possible? I'm not interestsed in trying to hack Sky and that sort of game, I
just want to get the most out of the gear I've got.
What's the official story with TV3 and Prime coming onboard...they are the
main reasons I've gone this way (my TVs are from the UK and I don't want to
buy Sky Digital just to get the FTA's) and I was assured they will be
available soon. Is this so?
As you can see, I've got loads of questions...I'm no techno-noob, I'm a
network administrator with an extensive Home Theater setup and home network
hosting games consoles PCs etc. I'm just new to this digital TV stuff and
I've got nobody local to go to for help/guidance.
Any feedback would be appreciated...my hot mail is dgriffnz

Here is a list of the satellites (including TV + Radio content + co-ords) you
most probably have been setup with:
http://www.lyngsat.com/optusb1.html
http://www.lyngsat.com/optusb3.html
http://www.lyngsat.com/optusc1.html
The ones with a big red [F] are Free-To-Air (FTA) channels. Note that we can
only get Vertical beam [V] (not Horizontal beam [H]) from Optus B3, so many of
the stations listed are out of reach.
The Atom will let you receive Optus Aurora TV free-of-charge from Optus C1,
although it's not ethical. You can obtain a card from Aussie to do it by the
book. Many consider "Irdeto 1" encryption to be FTA though.

Hi Grol,
yep, I'm on B1,B3 and C1.
Out of interest, is the Aurora something that can be downloaded to the Atom
(the installer was telling about something like this...). To do it, is an
individual card required from Oz, or is it possible for users to "share"
cards?

I am told that you need someone in Australia to buy and activate a card for you.
However, the Atom is supposed to be able to de-crypt Aurora's Irdeto 1
encryption out-of-the-box, no card needed. I'm personally not comfortable with
this, but others are. An Aurora card can be got for about $100 I am told. |

If you have 3 lnbf's you are probably set up for B3 + C1+B1.
B3 has the most fta, mostly religion. There is some encrypted Irdeto stuff
on 12407V some is Irdeto1/2 others are irdeto2 only.
C1 12407V has Optus Aurora channels such as SBS W.A SBS.QLD, Central7 these
are irdeto1 encrypted and are accessed via card or in the ucas menu if you
have the codes.
B1 has tvnz 1,2, maori tv fv1,2,3 (cctv etc) plus radios, there is in an
issue with the channel names on this satellite not saving properly. NONE of
the receivers I have tried can manage to get the names in the sky
transponders correct. Has to be an issue with SKYS encoders.

|
You can always do a channel delete, as long as the transponders are not
deleted in the satellite configuration.

Nothing liek that there yet. Wait for TVNZ news channel?

Hi,
I've got an Atom with two card slots in the front. I can't tell you anything
more as there is a definate lack of labelling on the unit.!
Thanks to everyone for the help. I've got C7, SBSWA etc, so it looks like
I've got a fully "loaded" unit right out of the box. Don't ask me how they
got there, I don't want to know.
Being so far South and East on the NZ mainland, do I have access to any sats
that those further up-country might be missing out on?
I'm eager to learn as much as possible...I feel I'm at the start of a great
new hobby!
Thanks again

So it is, I've just seen the internals on one of the sites recommended to

Hmmm....ok, now I can select CAS system. I have four listed. Can you
enlighten me as to the function of this feature. I'm not too eager to play
for fear of stuffing something up. I'm hoping this is something useful....!

There are if you scroll down there is a 5th. Nothing you can play with here
really unless you have access to more signals e.g a cband dish. |

I'll have a play...I think I've got a C band dish, it's 88cm. I'm getting C1
so I guess I'm ok.
I'll report back on what happens after I've tried a few things. Wish me
luck.
