Ok, I've been seeing commercials on TV about the DirecTV DVR. I
currently have the DirecTivo box.

My questions: What is the difference between the DirecTivo and the
DirecTV DVR? There is a difference isn't there?

Does the DirecTV DVR have the Tivo service?

Does the DirecTV DVR allow you to skip commercials?

Is there an additional charge to use the DirecTV DVR like there is for
my DirecTivo?

Should I switch from my DirecTivo and get a DirecTV DVR?

etc..

Thanks!

The DirecTV DVR (Model is R-15) uses it's own service rather than the
TiVo service we've currewntly been seeing. The menu system is much more
like the D-10/H-10 format. It works faster, and has a 100 hour capacity.
It does not have some of the TiVo-only features like Suggestions.
Although, it has some features not available on the TiVo like CallerID,
DTV Active, and Mix Channels.

No it has a seperate service.

Quote:

Yes, it has FF function, and may or may not have 30-sec skip.

No, it will be one $5.99 charge per household for any DVR box like it is
now. You won't pay for TiVo and DTV DVR seperately.

That depends on if you like TiVo features of DirecTV DVR features, or
you could have both. I personally wouldn't trade my TiVo for the R-15.

Yes $5.99 monthly. It's directly inline with the DirecTiVo service
price which is also $5.99 a month for new subs. If you've already got
DirecTiVo service it will stay at the $4.99 monthly.

Yes, that's the exception, but you weren't paying $4.99 a month, so you
weren't grandfathered.

I was paying $4.99 before I upgraded to Premier (and kept it for only a
month and a half), but I guess that doesn't count.

I've seen it. When I say it works faster, I mean the menu system and

Correct. It will fast forward, but I haven't seen if it has 30-sec skip.

Do you want to be an ALPHA tester on a box with fewer features, that may
have to be recalled after TiVo sues them for Patent infringement? Dish's
DVR comes to trial in 2006 for Patent Infringement. Remember the Kodak
clone of Polaroid. It was pulled after Kodak lost a patent lawsuit.

Even better. I got my HR10-250 a while back and was promised an increase
to $5.99. (I was retiring (sold it on eBay) an HDVR2) Price increase
hasn't happened yet. A pleasant surprise.

Write in and complain. Sometimes

What do you mean except in Detroit? That's the H20 that's being tested
in Detroit, not the R15. The R15 is still engineer tested only.

Yes, which was a shock to me because they aren't being installed yet.
R10's are still the majority of fresh DVR installs. I was also taken
back when I heard the new slogan "Somebody up there loves you". Please
let's not go back to the days of "Feel the Joy".

The R15 is supposed to hit the street on the 7th. The first reviews
should be out in hours of it's arrival. Personally I'll avoid it for
a few months at a minimum.

The way DTV is presenting it is that the R15 is for the user that just
wants basic DVR functionality (which is pretty much like a VCR) and the
TiVos will still be available for a while for people that want TiVo.
TiVo's will still be available to customers on request after the R15
becomes available.
