I've had a DirecTV TIVO for a few months now and have been happy with it.
About 2 months after I got it, I kill my LAN phone lines and went to only
Cell phones. My TIVO died and DirecTV is sending me a replacement unit.
Does anyone know how I can set up my replacement TIVO without the LAN phone
connection?

thanks for the help

No, you must make the two initial phonecalls through a landline or a
VoIP service.

No, you must make the two initial phonecalls through a landline or a

Or using PPP through the serial port - google for howto's on this; there are
plenty of them.

You probably did not need a new unit as it died when it could no longer update via the land line. For most units it is not important but for the DVR it is critical.

Not for a Direct TiVO- it gets it's updates over the satellite. It
only absolutely needs to make one call for the initial setup. After
that it doesn't need a phone connection unless you use the remote to
order pay-per view and can tolerate the nag screens.

Apparently the R15 doesn't even need to make the initial phone call.

As I do this for a living I am completely confident as to my previous statement. The DirecTV TiVO makes a call every day @ 2 am for it's updates. Regular software programs do come in from the satellite, but without a phone line- it will stop functioning.

Well, this explains the quality of DirecTV support personnel. Perhaps
you should look for a job in the food service industry where your lack of
skill won't be as obvious.

The DirecTV TiVO makes a call every day @ 2 am for it's
updates.

That's completely wrong. It does record a special program most every
day at 2am, but what that does is fill video content into the Showcases
and star items.

DirecTiVos don't call in every day any more since the recent software
updates, and the daily call generally just sends anonymous viewing data,

<snip>

My S1 Phillips Dtivo's ( DSR6000R's, I have two of them ) call/dialout every
two weeks or so ( for the TiVO part ) ever since I have had them, which has
been about 2003 or so.
For the directv part, my PBX call log data show it happens once a month
around the first of the month.

Maybe he has regular TiVO confused with DirecTivo? <shrug>
My standard Tivo's ( a S2 TCD240040 and an older S1 HDR312 ) do dial out
everyday though.

My HR10-250 does it every 3 days or so, so they must have changed something
on the S2 HD model from the others.
Maybe on the newer S2 Directv models it dials out to Tivo more often?

There are people at TiVo Community who haven't had a phone line plugged
in for over a year on their DirecTiVos. They do get a message once a day
from the unit that they should plug it in, but all functions work
perfectly. Only standalone TiVos will stop functioning without regular
phone calls (and you can go a week or so between those, if you don't mind
the less-than-timely guide data updates).

As I do DBS for a living too, but probably have a higher position, I am
confident that the DTivos don't need a phoneline other than for the
initial call and downloading showcases. How do I know this? I do it
myself. There's a nag screen, which can be disabled, but without a
phoneline you have full functionality.

I went to a Carl's Jr., and they were celebrating. 2nd time this year
they said. They had gotten three drive through orders in a row correct.

Although I know that the call frequency is no longer daily for my HDVR2
and HR10-250 (which I guess happened when software that the S1 DirecTiVos
didn't get), I'm not a good judge of exactly how often, because I had
participated in a beta, and that caused my call frequency to be much greater
than average users. So, it could be that 10-15 days is normal for everybody
else, while 1-5 days is normal for units that TiVo wanted data on more often.

Well, as long as you've got it enabled for remote ordering thru DTV,
which is just a matter of calling and saying you've hooked up a
phoneline, you can spend up to $49 usually before it'll cut you off.

I agree with you other than that. As least in my S1 DTiVo experience
anyway...... ;-)

Can I use DirecTV TiVO in my motorhome. While it would not be connected to

a phone line all of the time I could connect it every now and then to
receive any updates.
