I have a sky digi box. At the moment I can get Sky news and several
other channels. I cannot get BBC1 or ITV etc. I do not want to
subscribe to Sky.

How can I get hold of a card to watch BBC1 and ITV?

Thanks

You don't need a card, all the BBC and ITV channels now work without a
card. However, they are on Astra 2D, which is more targeted on the UK
than the other satellites - and you don't mention your location!.

Yes sorry Nigel, I forgot to mention I live in Spain, 90Kms south of
Torrevieja. Disregarding dish size, should I still be able to get BBC!
et al

Thanks

You don't need a card any more for the BBC or ITV. You still need a

viewing card for Ch4 or 5.
What do you get if you select 101, 102, 103 ?
Are any of the "several other channels" German or Italian ?

The dish size is something you cannot disregard !

Check out the neigbours and see what they are using, BBC and
ITV are on Astra 2D and getting it well in Spain depends very
much on area dish size a good LNB and accurate alignment.

Having a good receiver helps too. Thankfully these days you
no longer need a card for them, just for CH4/5 and a subscription
for the $ky stuff.

At the moment when I select 101,102,or 103 all I get is the blue
screen with the message to the effect that the channel cannot be
received.

I only get channels in English.

Many thanks to everyone who replied. I will now get a bigger dish and
see what happens.

That would be normal, as channels 101,102 and 103 are region-specific,
and their identity depends on your postcode. Therefore, they would
only be active if a valid card, registered to a particular postcode,
was present in the slot of the digibox.

AFAIK in this case the digibox 101,102 & 103 do not disappear but default to
London region for these channels.

Oh, thanks ... I'm sure you are right. I didn't realise there was a
default. I shall try taking the Sky card out of my box next time the
regional news is on and see what happens!

You may have to power it off at the back and press backup when it
asks you to insert a card.

I suspect the OP has a minidish in spain ... not a recipe for
success.

No, that won't work as if it has had a card it will be set to the region of that
card whether the card is in the slot or not. You would need to do a system reset
with the card out.

In that case I don't think I'll bother. I don't want to risk screwing
it up! At the very least, I would have to reprogram all my additional
channels.

For Murcia / Cartagena /Mazarrón (which is where I suspect you are)
you will need a 1,8m dish. There are many local businesses who can
help.

Even so, you won't receive the horizontally polarised channels on
Astra 2D between about 1900 and 0600 - this affects BBC2, BBC3 and
BBC4. You also have to choose the right region for BBC1 - 958,
Channel Islands is the most popular and for ITV1 963 - London is the
easiest.

You're still better off than those of us to the north of you - we
have problems even with a 2,4m dish.

"No satellite signal is being received" [or similar] ? If it is a

different message then your trouble might be more interesting.

Looks like you're on the right satellite then.

Until you get a bigger dish, you could try manually tuning to the BBC
and ITV channels via Services>4>4 (i.e. bypassing the dependance on
the default channel and EPG). If you're lucky (and your dish is big
enough) you might get some or all of what you are after via "Other
Channels" (Services>6) and also give yourself a chance to fine-tune
the aim of the current dish.

Not for 101 or 102. If there is no card present the box will remember
the channel mapping from the card last used. If no card has ever been
used (or the memory has been wiped using the FAQ procedure) then it
will default to London and England respectively.

For 103 the situation was slightly different until last week in that a
card was required at least once. Now that 103 is a unencrypted channel
I would expect it to appear always, like 101 and 102. I haven't tested
this though.
