Is Sky Plus worse than normal Sky? |
|
|
Hi,
I just upgraded from Sky (Panasonic TUDS B30) to Sky Plus by getting a
s/h Pace 3100 V2 with a 250GB Hard Disk (and latest software update).
I am new to Sky Plus but so far it seems in some areas things are
worse.
| Quote: | From the info below are my assumptions correct? Or do I have a faulty
box maybe? |
1. On normal Sky I can set the planner to alert me or to automatically
change channel when a programme starts.
On Sky Plus I can only set it to alert or record.
2a. On normal Sky the box will switch on from standby when a programme
starts.
On Sky Plus the box must already be switched on, it will not switch on
by itself, nor will it alert you (when you do switch on) that something
should be recording.
2b. If the Sky Plus box is off when a programme should be recording,
when you switch it on the channel you -had- set to record displays "No
signal available" (all other channels display ok). The only way to get
the channel back is to delete it from the planner.
3. The Sky Plus box has a hard disk and a fan which is quite audible
even if the disk is not in use. (Should the hard disk not sleep if you
are just watching TV?). Also stays on for hours after the box is
switched off.
4. When switching channels there is a longer pause before the picture
displays on Sky Plus than on normal Sky.
As I said, I'm new to Sky Plus having been used to ordinary Sky for
several years so maybe I misunderstood something, but the instruction
manual doesn't shed any extra light.
Thanks in advance for any helps on this.
Tiff
PS - yes, I know there -are- things that are better, for which I
obviously don't need to ask anythng about! |

I've never tried one, but if it's on standby doesn't it still record the

Perhaps not then?, next box I get in I'll try it, but why do you turn
the box to standby anyway?.

Things going round make noise, on some drives you can run software to
make them quieter - I believe Maxtor drives have this capability?.
You should also be careful where it's sat, the surface it's on can
amplify the noise.

Quite possibly, the box is doing more.

Mostly you appear to be thinking of it as a standard Sky box, when it's
no such thing!.

No, there's nothing 'better', there's nothing else that will do the
job!.

I think having only one downlead to your box is causing most of your
problems. Get a second connection, before condemning your box.

If you want my opinion.... STAY AWAY from anything that is labeled "PLUS"
or "IMPROVED"
It just means that they screwed up the first time and they are trying a
different tactic.

Thanks for the reply,
One thing I didn't mention is that, at the moment, there is only one
wire going into the box ... so maybe that could be causing some
problems (though I would only expect problems I if I was trying to
record 1 channel and watch another whih I haven't been able to try
yet).
| Quote: | 1. On normal Sky I can set the planner to alert me or to automatically
change channel when a programme starts.
On Sky Plus I can only set it to alert or record.
|
Why would you want to do anything else?.
Why?
2 reasons, firstly I have the sound switched on and I can be busy in
other rooms. When the box automatically starts-up & changes channel I
can hear the TV/theme music and conveniently be reminded that the
programme has just begun (rather than keep checking).
Secondly, so the box can be left on standby which means it is quieter
and uses less power.
| Quote: | 2a. On normal Sky the box will switch on from standby when a programme
starts.

should be recording.
|
I've never tried one, but if it's on standby doesn't it still record
the
programme?, which is what you've told it to do.
Apparently not. Does it do this for you?
Sounds like my box is faulty then?
| Quote: | 2b. If the Sky Plus box is off when a programme should be recording,

|
Perhaps not then?, next box I get in I'll try it, but why do you turn
the box to standby anyway?.
See above - less noise/power.
(maybe when I get the 2nd line cable put in the "No signal available"
error may be solved?)
| Quote: | 3. The Sky Plus box has a hard disk and a fan which is quite audible

I wonder if it's because of the increased hard dirve but I don't
imagine the fan will have been replaced. But I guess it's normal that
it's eaily noticeable?
| Quote: | 4. When switching channels there is a longer pause before the picture

Quite possibly, the box is doing more.
I would have expected that the processor would be faster fom when my
Panasonic box was made thus negating this!!!

I meant that there are things in the Sky Plus which are better - e.g
Live Rewind and ability o record and also being able to cope with 2
channels at once .... so it's not all bad news. |

The recording function replaces autoview on the Sky+.

The Sky+ should record in standby. It will not switch on from standby
when a recording starts (see autoview answer above).

I wonder if you don't have some sort of problem with your LNB/tuners.
Try swapping the two feeds over at the back of the box and see what
happens.

the channel back is to delete it from the planner.

? I don't understand you.

Try reloading the software and putting your box in a well-ventilated
position. Bear in mind that if you have instant replay enabled the
drive is working constantly.

Can't say I've noticed but my regular digibox box is run by a Tivo
anyway.

Sounds like it, my Sky+ will record in standby or when 'on'.

The Sky+ won't work properly with only one LNB feed, this could be one
source of your 'problems'?.

Sky boxes don't use less power on standby, I've never measured a Sky+
(although I have standard Sky boxes) - but if the drive is powered down
it will (presumably?) take slightly less power.
And to one of your other points, yes the larger drive will almost
certainly be noisier than the original, and the fan is more likely to
run continuously as well, due to the increased heat.

The Sky+ needs two feeds to work properly. This is why you have
problems. Indeed I suggested this previously.

Finally managed to put another feed in and, yes, it seems that the box
cannot work with only one feed.
I've also had to put in a new (quad) LNB.
Singal strength/quality are identical (past the 'OK' in the menu).
I can access all channels ... except ITV2 and ITV4 (whether I use my
old or new box).
Is there any logical explanation why I get the message "No satellite
signal ..." on these 2 channels alone?
Thanks
