Link to a review of DirecTV's new DVR the R15 |
|

Well the R15 finally escaped the warehouse and is in the hands of a
real user. It sounds like the R15 will be out and about in the next
few weeks.
The review is being built slowly so it will evolve over time .

From what I read so far I'll be happier staying with my TiVO based
units.

Right. WHich is why DTV is still offering TiVo's on request. TiVo is
still the premier DVR choice. One of the biggest reasons for developing
a seperate brand of DVR is to compete with Echostar. It wouldn't be
feasable to offer free DTiVos to every customer, so they needed to make
a cheaper DVR for people who aren't accustomed to the advanced TiVo
features.

The majority of people don't. They just think their TiVo is possesed and
records random shows.

Yes, same thing it's good if you can afford it, but some people don't
want the extra cost.

Yeah but the reviewer isn't a TiVo Junkie he's a tech Junkie.
It doesn't seem entirely offal but given my experience with a TiVO
what is missing from a TiVO on the R15 is what would bother me.
I like suggestions which have no equivalent. There doesn't appear to
be room for a second drive to expand capacity but that might change.
There are some little piddling things missing I would like to have
over the one real improvement which is the live display while
programming.
It's an apples and PCs sort of thing. I tolerate a PC because It's

designed.

Is that a Freudian slip?
offal: The rejected or waste parts of any process, especially the inedible
parts of a butchered animal, such as the viscera.
awful: Frightful; exceedingly bad.

That's why I wondered if it was intentional (i.e., the R15 is so bad it
reminds of you of rotting body parts :), semi-intentional, or just a typo.

The second definition from answers.com is the one I intended.
2. Refuse; rubbish.

I like this one better from Wikipedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offal>; although, they seem to believe
it is a class of food. In American English, the words offal and awful
are virtually homonyms - one dictionary shows the pronunciation of
awful as being the same as the most-frequent pronunciation of offal -
a fact which offers opportunity for some really bad puns.
