Will an UK Freeview box work in Spain? |
|
|
Hi guys,
I am relocating to Spain soon, and would like to know if it is worth
taking my British tv set (tv-vcr combo) and freeview box. Once we tried
a French tv set here in Britain with the Freeview box and it worked
fine! So I wonder if it's the same for Spain.
Does anybody know if they would work over there?
Thanks for any help!

The freeview box will work, but will obviously get Spanish
channels. They are rolling out DTT at present.
However, broadcast analogue is pal B/G so unless your
UK television supports that in addition to UK Pal I it may
be better to sell it and buy a new one locally.

Regarding the Freeview box, I did a bit of research on the Internet and
my model (Nokia 221T) is not sold in Spain. There seem to be different
standards for DTT as well, do you reckon that it will work anyway or
does it need to comply with a specific standard?

I've tried three different UK boxes, they all worked. Two allowed the
modulator to be set for PAL-G the other one only had a SCART
anyway, which is what one wants as TVE is wide screen and stereo
on DTT or whatever their acronym is. I get a 98% signal and don't
live in Spain ...

I saw a poster for TDT at a Spanish shop, but they did not have
any product on the shelves to look at.
I can see four MUX's on my spectrum analyser here, but only
one resolves into anything useful on the freeview box.
BTW has the move of ITV1 + 2 to a V transponder helped your
reception of A2D ?

Thanks for the link to the costablancaexpats website. I am moving to
Madrid, but still find the information extremely useful!!
I speak Spanish, so the forum you mentioned is very handy too.
¡MUCHAS GRACIAS, Bill & Jim! :-) |

If you speak Spanish, there is a thriving forum about TDT at
http://www.televisiondigital.electronicafacil.net/index.php
(look out for postings from that mad Englishman billnot).
You don't say which part of Spain you're moving to, but you may find
useful information at
http://costablancaexpats.net
(despite the name, we cover much of Spain)
Check out the FAQ on television.

In my experience, it is not as cheap as the UK where you get MUCH
greater bandwidth for a lot less money! |

Well, the Internet is alive and well and broadband
remarkably cheap in Spain so let us know how you get on.
A lot of effort in these parts is involved in getting British
television. Currently there are five Spanish national, one
regional and more local TV stations on analogue than
I can count, along with a couple of hundred on Canal+
satellite, so if you like television there is enough.
The Spanish national digital terrestial plan allows for 128
channels everywhere.
But my favourite is Southpark in German ...

I don't know how the UK compares to Spain but compared to France it is _much_
more expensive for lower speeds & we don't have capped subscriptions either.

Its a hell of a lot cheaper and faster than mine. There are
also innovative wireless services springing up which provide delivery
to the more remote locations.
"President of Telefonica, Julio Linares, forecast that by 2010 more
than 60 per cent of Spanish homes should have a broadband connection
of up to 50Mb, this will require an estimated investment of around E 4
billion."
When buying internet you also need to look at the contention ratio
thats rather like the practice of airlines overselling seating
capacity except with the net you do get squeezed in somehow.

Now that you mentioned it, which broadband company do you recommend in
Spain that is cheap and reliable? |

We are wandering off topic, but much prefer my Spanish deal to
anything in the UK. Fixed IP, unlimited download, as many computers
as I like (currently 5), 1Mb / 256Kb for 40 Euros per month.
I run a server on that, and in the 3 years I've had it, it's been
down (other than through my own maintenance) for less than 15
minutes.
Telefonica may suck in many ways, but they've got this service spot
on.

I just checked & I pay 34.90 Euros (23.50GBP) for 8Mb/s uncapped. So far this
month I have used >45GB & we are one third through the month.
