Replacing a 4900 with a DishPlayer

Postby Bernie Cosell » Fri Nov 11, 2005 8:08 pm

We've really gotten fed up with our 4900, so I bought a DishPlayer [510].
I'm not exactly sure how to connect it.. what I have now is a Dish 500
dish, but apparently the DVRs want a "Dish Pro" dish. Can I connect it to
my 500 or do I need to call DISH and have an installer come and put in a
new one? Also, it says: "you must use only RG-6 cable -- do not use
existing cables such as RG-59./ be sire that any outdoor connections are
made using waterproof F-connectors". Idon';t even know what all those
words mean [I wouldn't know an RG-59 cable if I tripped over it; I haven't
a clue if I can get RG-6 cable at my local hardware store]. The prospect
of ripping out and replacing all the wiring that the nice DISH
installer-folk put in doesn't thrill me either...

I was really hoping I could just plug the dishplayer in in place of my 4900
and be good to go [and indeed, I'll probably try doing that], but should
the installation really take all that extra work? Should I have someone
who knows what they're doing come in and take care of it? Thanks!

Bernie,

You can just plug in your new 510 in place of your 4900.
Everything you have (dish 500 and cable) will work with the 510.

Much thanks -- ignoring all that techie gobbledygook and just going ahead
and connecting up the 510 worked like a charm. Thanks! [it does leave me
wondering what all that re-cabling and such was about, but it seems not to
matter]
