When recording Directv satellite downloaded movies on a DVD Recorder, I
usually get at least one "freeze frame" lasting a one or more seconds.
These freeze-frames seem to appear only on Showtime channels. Recordings
made on TCM are okay.

Does Showtime do anything to its signal to "spoil" recordings such as
inserting these feeze-frames deliberately? Or, is it a matter of my
equipment not being able to process the incoming signals properly?

Probably your recorder as I am unaware of any spoiler from Showtime.
It could also be signal strength or the device used to recorde the show.
