Hi,

Now that Directv came out with new HS-20 MPEG4 Directv HDTV reciever,
its in time for an HDTV upgrade for Christmas.

We currently have two Sony standard Directv dishes on a standard Drectv
Sony antenna. We will upgrade on television to HDTV while the other
stay the same. As far as I understand, we need a new dish ($50) and the
HS-20 reciever which is around $200 retail.

Being Directv customers for 5-6 years, paying around $80 per month, is
it possible to get Directv to give us a deal on this new dish and
antenna in exchange to contact with some programming (we don't have a
contract) Maybe we can trade in one of the old boxes for the new HDTV
one?

You won't get if you don't ask them. Call and ask for retention. Then
report back.

Calling into retention for everything is not always a good idea. You get
worse support and inaccurate information. If you want the upgrade,
either ask for technical tier 1 or CIS.

Way to abuse the system Jack! Not everyone has account status like
yours. I'm guessing you've been with DTV for a while. Not everyone has.
Not everyone pays their bills on time. Retention only gives good offers
to good customers. A lot of people call retention for technical support.
DTV is starting to lock down and audit retention because of abuse and
because of pushover agents who'll give you the farm. Don't take this as
an insult. You are getting a good dead, and it is legit, but in the
future don't expect such grand discounts.

Yes, if you throw a fit and get a passive agent, they'll credit you
anything. Officially, it's $99. If you want to be an ass and abuse the
system and spoil it for future people, by all means, abuse customer
service. I personally think the $99 is a rip off, seeing as how a
SD LiL upgrade is free, As of today, the system says $99 for the
upgrade.

From the posts you've read is the key. I'm looking at an internal memo
from DTV. Forum posts aren't official.

Heck, one guy
got a call from DirecTV asking when they could come out and upgrade his
receiver/dish, and he didn't know the H20 was available to people outside
Detroit. When he asked the price, they said "free after the credit".

Well, that guy's going to have one hell of a shock when he gets the bill
next month and he's being charged $99. Then he'll have to call in, claim
that's what he was told, and after about twenty minutes of verifying he
may get a credit. They usually won't post again about it so they don't
look like a fool. Just like one of the many people who got that special
retention HD-DVR credit reversed last month, and now owe another $300.

2006) I'm not sure if the units will be TiVo brand or if they'll be
