This is indeed a funny technological development.

Just a few years ago, people wouldn't decide a car
purchase based on the brand of stereo or CD player
that it came with. Maybe it was a factor, but it
was never decisive.

But I will definitely check the kind of GPS in my
next car. Which brings me to the point: where can
I find a list of GPS brands and car brands?
What cars have Garmins in them?

What cars have Garmins in them?

My Toyota. A Legend on the dash :>)

Kidding aside, is a built in GPS system like the built in "car phones"
of yesteryear? Will they become obsolete as GPS becomes fully
incorporated in cell phones? Does it make sense to invest all that $$
for a GPS system that is tied to the automobile, or would it be better
to have one that you can take along with you?

I don't believe any vehicles other than airplanes come from the factory
with a Garmin. Do yourself a favor and get the StreetPilot 2610 and save
some money too.

You are correct. I forgot about the 2 wheel vehicles. They first were
offered with the StreetPilot III and now are offered with a 2610. Thanks for
the correction.

Donīt buy a car with a build-in gps!
You want a gps that you can take with you.
How do you find your car back without your gps.

I wonder how much a dealer will charge you to update the factory installed
unit or how much he will charge to replace it? The Garmin that is mentioned
that comes with the BMW motorcycles was listed at around $500-700 more than
you could buy one for, although it had BMW specific software added (i.e.
dealer locations that you download for free off the web) as well as a jack
for the sound-to-helmet (I think??).

Also, you have to know that car thieves will no doubt take the Toyota with
the GPS rather than the one without.

Go with the 2610 that you can take with you and update the map software and
firmware yourself.

Not likely since dead-reckoning is generally provided as part of the
built-in systems and it is not really a "portable" option. This may
only be of concern to people who live near or travel in large cities
or very mountainous regions, but it's a concern nonetheless.

You do, however, pay for the priviledge. When it comes to bang for
the buck, something like the 2610 or RM 500 is going to win out
almost every time.

Cheers,

"modified" bit though.

Ah, yes I've seen that, IIRC it's not a modified 2610 as such, but an
addon unit that mounts next to the 2610 on the handlebars. Can't find the
link to the website I saw it on now..!

They added a row of buttons on the left side.

And the startup screen shows the BMW logo :)
(plus it's 2x the price of a regular 2610 ...)
