My newly purchased ipaq 3950 has been working ok for over a week and now
some of the icons like "Home" have gone grey and the unit sits and sits
for ages saying "waiting for satlights" which it now wont pick up.
i bought the unit indoors and used a car battery to set it back up and
left it an hour for the sats and no joy.
Is this tom tom 5 all its cracked up to be?

Is your GPS unit (which you didn't bother to mention) configured
correctly in TTN5?

No, of course it doesn't run for anybody at all, we just pretend we
like it.

Newly bought? The 3950 has been out of production for some time! What GPS
Receiver do you have? You are trying this outdoors I hope?

Start by checking the hardware is actually working.

You can get a copy of winfast navigator here:
http://www.routeplanners.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=449

There are various displays that show the GPS is actively doing something, or
not. It's easier to see from in there as Tomtom doesn't tell you anything
worthwhile.

Not forgetting to disconnect from the GPS before exiting navigator, because if
the serial port is in use TT won't be able to use it as well, you should now
find TT can find it assuming it is set to look for the same thing as Navigator
found a GPS on. TT has a major limitation on anything that isn't actually a TT
branded antenna - it can only be NMEA 4800 baud.

If you can't see the GPS at all, that's a different question.
