Now you can find Music Choice on Intelsat Americas 5 (Formerly Telestar 5)
on 11836Mhz and other freq. for free. You need a
digital receiver and a 3ft dish to get it.

Rock genre as provided by MusicChoice Channel 819.
Other problems:
XM "rides the gain" with the volume rising and falling. Like the D.J. is
playing with his volume control knob. MusicChoice was always perfectly
balanced.
XM disc jockeys talking over the intro of the music selection.
MusicChoice
did not have this extraneous annoyance.
This was a bad management decision. Subscribers should demand DIRECTV
return the MusicChoice channels to supplement the badly lacking XM Radio
channels or lower the subscription price accordingly.
The only good out of this is I learned what XM is all about: I don't want
any part of it in my car, house, or when I'm out jogging.

I have a Skystar2 PCI.. I kind of wish I bought the USB though because
it was only 10 bucks more or so and can be used on the Powerbook or on
any Windows machine.
The Skystar is a great unit though, especially for the price.. I'll be
happier when I can mount a motor dish so I can search for open feeds.
For people with slower machines, or want easy video output, they might
appreciate the Hauppauge NEXUS-S, which is slightly more but has an
onboard MPEG-2 decoder to reduce load on the computer.

I am disappointed with XM on DTVso far. They should have stayed with Music
Choice or gone to Sirius. The naming of channels that mean nothing are not
funny.
I have access to www.live365.com and I have channels that are available on
the big dish and I have used my son's Sirius and the XM on Directv is the
worst I have ever used.
You imply I must be missing something--you are correct, I am missing decent
small dish music programming.

No, all of the music channels from Sirius are on Dish Network, just
none of the talk/entertainment/comedy/etc. streams. They also have
shown the correct Artist/Title data since day one. I'm no longer a
DirecTV customer, haven't been since they made an attempt to sue me
while I was paying them 90 a month.. I don't miss it in the least, I'm
a much happier Dish Network customer.
Dish also left their music channels they had before. On Dish, Sirius
channels start at 6001. The channels on Dish Network correspond with
the channels on the Sirius service, for instance Octane //20 is 6020 on
Dish Network.

And they left out the metal channel, the electronica channels, the
disco channel,
the classical channel, the ambient channel. XM on DirecTV is terrible.
Plus, there is no comparison to MusicChoice's channel 806 'sound of the
seasons'-- when inbetween seasons, they programmed cool trip-hop
material which is now not available.
I wonder if DishTV carved up Sirius in the same way.

XM studied carefully the need for "DJs", and this was a deliberate decision
made when they started. Their studies showed the public did not want the
phony, canned feeling of "Muzak". If you want just music at home, play a CD.

XM is chronically bashed (by the TOP40 crowd) for its musical
diversity. Simply put, you are not going to find more diverse
offerings on the public airwaves.
One realy gets the sense you haven't even listened to it, because your
remarks are totally inconsistent with having done so.
I was never dissing XM. Beats commercial radio all to hell.
It was directed at those lamenting the loss of the Muzak channels on DTV.
If you want a RADIO service with DJs and BS jingles and top 6
countdowns and assholes calling in on the phone, then XM is great.
Maybe thats good for the car....
At home, I want a MUSIC service ...NO TALKING....no BS jingles .. just
music.
If I want to know the name of the group.... I look at the TV. And I
don't need to be reminded every 5 minutes that the 60's are on 6, thank
you very much....
I'm glad I can still get MUSIC choice via cable.
I can see why it may be a good buisness move for XM and for DTV, but
from my perspective, it sucks.
Maybe they'll figure out they can save money without jingles and DJs.

It's part of a test to see whether you are paying attention. Anyway, if you
already know what song it is you don't need the TV title.
