I got me a DirecTV+ receiver today (R15) for free. I've got to say, it's
pretty fast. It's a nice little machine. Only been playing with it for
a few hours. It's a nice basic DVR. It's still no TiVo. Anything you'd
like me try? Doesn't look like it has FF correction. Something I've
grown to love with my TiVo's.

Except, of course, for the reported crashes and lockups, and the fact that
it doesn't seem to be able to record anything reliably unless it is a
manual recording.

For most DVR users, though, a two-tuner unit with a limit of 50 items in
the "Priority List" (what they call the Season Pass Manager) is definitely
a deal breaker.

Just a matter of time till they get sued for violating tiVo's patents.

They filed suit against EChostar almost 2 years ago:

Ok, a few hours of my rigorous testing (which is obviously more in depth
than DTV's development engineers'. Here's a list of problems with the
R15.

NFL Sunday Ticket will not record.

NFL Showcases aren't in the menu,

Mix channels don't record. Nor does DTV Active

Verified ther's do FF or RW auto-correction. (That feature is patented
by TiVo)

Series Link (aka Season Pass) is a pain in the butt to set up.

Some recordings expire within 24 hours automatically.

I do use my TiVo's. All four of them, as well as now the R15. This was
just meant to be a comparison for the benefit of people interested in
DirecTV+.

There have been grumbles from R15 owners about the lack of dual
live buffering. That feature may be impossible without TiVo patent sharing.

I'm reluctant to criticize the new DirecTV DVR as it took a number
of software updates on the TiVo based satellite DVR before the unit became
what it is today. Feature additions and performance improvements came
via software updates.

The first generation DirecTV DVR has received 4 software updates since
dual tuners were made functional in 2002. One of those updates disabled the
second tuner in a number of machines and some were replaced at DirecTV's
expense before a software fix about a month later.

The second generation DirecTV DVR had several problems requiring
software updates to correct. One of these problems was spontaneous
restarts while listening to a Music Choice channel at the time a recording
was in process on the "other" tuner. There have been 5 software updates
for the second generation DirecTV DVR since Oct 2003.

By itself, that's dumb, but the dialog that pops up forces the user to
either change the channel right then or completely cancel the recording.

Wow, that is mind-numbingly stupid. Even the shitty SciAtl SARA
software isn't that bad.

It sounds like a piece of shit.

What's truly sad is that the unit becomes very unstable at about 35 items
in the "Priority List", and even with 10-20 it regularly doesn't record
what it said it would, which is usually more than you wanted because the
"First Run Only" setting doesn't work.

Last, there's the issue with recording dropouts if you are browsing a
menu while playing a previously recorded show. I could almost understand
this if the unit had to encode to MPEG-2, but all it does is save the
bits to disk. The HD DirecTiVo (HR10-250) has no problem with watching
one HD recording while two new HD shows are recording...that's at least 6x
the bandwidth that the R15 needs to watch one and record another.

All PPV's. Regardless if they're VOD or not. Notice, if you record a
boxing match or a UFC fight, it won't be there tommorow.
