City Navigator ver 5 versus new 7 |
|
|
My hard drive died and lost my install of City Nav 5.0 that came with my
2610. My main problem is I have lost one of the 2 discs and cant reinstall
it. I was thinking I may be able to call Garmin and get a replacement disc
though I realize they may tell me they cant help me.( Anyone have similar xp
with them?)
However I now see that ver 7.0 is out. Is it worth the $116 to get it or
will I see little difference?

There is probably no reason to buy the software again. Just call Garmin
and they will replace your software I'm sure. I've never heard they
wouldn't.

It can't help to ask. If you're a registered user there certainly
would be no harm in sending you a replacement CD.

That price is for City Select. The upgrade price for City Navigator is
$75. As for whether or not you see a difference will depend on where
you live and where you travel. Around our area there's a very noticeable
set of important changes from v5 to v7.

How on earth do you lose just one of the discs?

OK thanks all ! I will call Garmin tomorrow. Now that I look through their
site more I see theres a $75 upgrade price for the new ver7 software though
it doesnt explicitly say its available to owners of ver 5. But youre saying
that this is the case???
Im not sure whether I want to just try and get a replacement disc (disc2
btw) or get the upgrade. I have noticed over time, incorrect street info
and more often, POI information. I wonder how much more correct the map
info from the new ver would be. I guess thats a case-by-case kind of thing
but Id love to hear more about that from you all.
BTW, Im planning on getting the new 7200 for our next delivery vehicle. Does
anyone know if it will be able to be "hard installed" , ie. bolted, onto a
dash? This is important because if it can be it will be covered by our
insurance.
Thanks again for all your help,
John

Version 5 to 7 is ok, but note that it's an upgrade rather than a
regular installation and it'll expect to find a previous version of
CityNavigator already installed. So to use it you'll first need to
install vers. 5 and then do the upgrade to vers. 7. Explain the
missing CD to Garmin when you call them and see if they'll send you a
replacement in addition to the vers. 7 upgrade. |

Yes he was correct.

Either way you will probably need both original disks. You have to have
a version of CN installed before you can install the update.

A lot going from v5 to 7. Just remember though there is no such thing as
an accurate map or POI info.

Well I called Garmin today. They (a very nice/helpful lady) said I could
either get a copy of the missing ver 5 disc for $10 or a copy of the full
version 7 for $75. I opted for the new version. She seemed to be selling me
on ver 7 and figuring it may have some updated roads and POI's in my area I
decided to take the chance. We use the 2610 daily for deliveries and it
seems more and more we come across new suddivisions and roads that arent on
the maps. Im just hoping the version will help some with that. Also found
out that , like their other products, the 7200 cannot be "hard" installed so
that it will be covered by our theft insurance...too bad.

What do you mean by hard installed? The 7200 cannot be "hard" installed so
that it will be covered by our theft insurance. |

$75 is lot cheaper than the previous $150 upgrade price for City
Navigator. For $75 I may upgrade mine, but not $150, and with reasonable
software upgrade I may even upgrade my hardware. |

I guess you mean 100% accurate eh? My experience is that both the maps and
POI info are 75-90%
accurate. Is there something Im missing from this comment Darell? |

For some reason some people think there are perfect maps and it simply
is not possible. Maps change by the minute if not more often. I would guess
that the maps that Garmin uses are about 95% accurate and the POI info.
about 85% accurate at any given time. Yes when I said accurate maps I meant
100%.

Is there another player out there in map data? Is Navteq the most
accurate/thorough data available? However I realize that most likely no
other data can be used with Garmin unit. Just wondering if Navteq has any
real competition.
