XM- What channels don't have someone yapping...

Postby Frederick Pileggi » Sat Nov 19, 2005 12:08 pm

OK...I was looking forward to Xm radio channels with my Total Choice
Premier subscription having enjoyed Music Choice for years.
So I turned to the 60's channel and "WPOP...Hartford yadda yadda
yadda", play some music, and "WPOP"... you get the drift folks... Try a
few other channels and same thing... some music, followed by some talk.. As
Peggy Lee sang "Is that all there is".
What channels are music only?

I listen to my XM Radio in my vehicle on my daily commutes to and from
work.I have found that the "70's Channel" is 98% free of talk. The only
time I have found it different is about 1300-1400 hours EST,when you
might hear a brief random comment.Other than that,it is one continuous
song after another in my experience.
The "Sunny Channel" [channel 24 on an XM receiver] is 99% free, except
to announce that it is the "Sunny Channel" once an hour for
approximately 5 seconds.Of course, this channel is instrumental "Easy
Listening" if you like that sort of thing. After a hard day at work,I
cannot listen to a pop channel and need something 'quieter'.....LOL.

Who ever said there were "music only" channels?

When they started that was a selling point I believe.

That's "commercial" free, not talk free. But, even that is a bit of a
misnomer. They do have occasional self-promoting commercials. All in all,
it still beats regular radio, or so I think. I still have to occasionally
justify the expense to myself. But, at the end of the day, I'm glad I've
got it.

ANYTHING beats regular radio.....

but XM does not beat Music Choice....

XM might be OK if they canned the DJs and jingles...

At first I thought it might be okay, but this morning the stations I listen
to like Soul Street are only showing a name like "Soul Street" or "Soul
Collection" instead of individual artists. I didn't realize how often I hit
info with Music Choice to find out the name of the song or artist. I really
miss it, and don't like waiting for a voice to announce (before or after)
who or what is or was playing. Bummer, so far.

Ellen_ What you describe is another peeve of mine. I do see music info
being updated for some of the channels but slower then MusicChoice did. At
times the info is wrong for the song playing... the next song etc.. Even
worse is when the DJ is yacking still during the intro of a song! XM
radio.... more like AM radio...

The other night, the channels I checked had the same song listed
for *hours*. One kept saying we were hearing Ted Nugent, another
claimed that every song was by Lhasa, etc. The next day, most
channels were okay, although the soundtracks one only said "Cinemagic"
for everything, just like the situation you described with Soul Street.

Startup glitches, I presume. Although perhaps someone here who gets
XM via their own receivers can tell us whether they've seen the same
problem there.

How is this supposed to be better than music choice?

The obvious more channels, as well as a bigger music library.

I agree. It's not much of a switch. Music Choice was more of a music
channel service than a radio station. Luckily I've got Comcast as well,
so I still have my Music Choice.

Patty

I've scrapped my plans to get an XM receiver, now that I know how much
yapping is on the service. At least I haven't heard any commercials.

How is this supposed to be better than music choice?

Well maybe not so obvious. More channels of what someone doesn't listen to
is not really more to them. Also unless you listen an awful lot I don't
think the library size will turn out to be much of an issue, unless of
coarse you are listening to things such as oldies or off the main stream
type of music. But again, it depends on what that bigger library has in it.

I personally would much rather have Music Choice back. The self promos and

It's only been a few days, but I find I'm less apt to turn the music on at
all. This is a disappointment so far. And since I'm used to Music Choice,
the voices that come on now sound like commercials to me, no matter what
they're talking about. I wish I had Comcast to go back to.
