I am considering getting a GPS unit for the car, would prefer one with built
in or rechargeable battery useage, already have a road angel so camera
detection not required.
The screen size is not too important as I would be depending on the voice
prompts, also the usage of it would be very rare so would be 'tossed'to the
side until I am going to a town city where I am not familiar, so lower cost
would be better, the faves so far is the garmin i3 or TT300 , any other
suggestions?

If you are relying on voice prompts alone then be aware that the Tomtom
software has some serious flaws. Often the voice prompt will say
something like turn left then turn right. The right hand turn may be the
third turn after the left and/or it may be half a mile down the road.
The map however will show the correct route.

.... and then there is the infamous do a U turn followed by do a U turn
on roundabouts.

I'm happy with my Navman iCN520

Is this specific to certain maps?

I have heard of this behaviour but luckily
not experienced it myself so far with a TomTom Navigator 5 running on my
PPC.

The incorrect second voice instructions happen more frequently when
travelling on country roads rather than main A roads. I'm now used to
this bug and a quick glance at the screen will show that the voice
instruction is incorrect.

The double instruction would be appropriate where two turns happen in
quick succession but sadly TT have implemented something that is not
useful because you cannot trust the second instruction.

One a road where you get the double U turn instruction is at the
Chelmsford end of the (new) A130.

I've found the inappropriate use of the U turn instruction when
navigating a roundabout very common.

The dangerous U turn instructions occur when you deviate from a TT
suggested route. I've had instructions to do a U turn in small central
carriageway gaps on fast roads with following traffic travelling at 70+
mph. IMO, TT should ditch the U turn instruction in favour of a correct
instruction - or use the turn around when safe instruction.
