Yet another 'What GPS to buy' question |
|
|
Dear all,
We're based in the UK, but doing a lot of travelling between UK and
Spain via Eurotunnel. We're looking for a gps system with built in
street level mapping for — you guessed it — England, France, Spain...
At the moment Currys/Comet/Dixons have an Advent 400 which appears to
meet the criterion, going for GBP 269. Also seen a Navman iCN 650 for
gbp 446.49 inc delivery (www.handtec.co.uk) which looks a good price.
Any other suggestions? One thing that needs to be noted: changeover of
maps in any machine must be without intervention of PC — we don't have
a 'PC' in this house (still running Acorn RiscPCs after 11 years), and
we don't want the hassle of looking for a computer to change things
when we get to France/Spain. This may be a naive point to some people,
but we're totally new to all this so your indulgence would be
appreciated.
Any pointers on who to avoid purchasing from would also be
appreciated, without libellous statements thanks.
Thanks to all who read this

I've got the Navman iCN520 and am pleased with it, easily portable between
vehicles. I believe the Euorpe maps come preloaded on some models eg iCN650
http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=159&xSec=1 so should do what you
want. |

I use a Garmin Quest which comes with a base map of the UK & Western Europe
(cities and major routes) pre-loaded plus street-level maps of the UK and
Western Europe on a CD. You need a PC to load these detailed maps initially
but once you've done that, they stay loaded and are available without
further intervention.
BUT...
.... the Quest's available memory is slightly less than 256k whereas the
England/France/Spain detailed maps total nearly 600k. Of course you could
load only the bits of the map where you know you're going to be driving but
if you really want the whole of England/France/Spain, then the Quest doesn't
have enough memory. I've checked the size of the map set from Birmingham to
Dover and from Calais to the Spanish border (approx half of France) and it
totals 280k (for comparison purposes).
When shopping for a unit, ask the salesman whether it will hold all the
detailed maps you need in memory at the same time.
HTH,
R. |

Oh, and a warning note: "Advent" is Dixon-speak for "Total Rubbish".
Trust me, if you buy one, you'll be repairing or replacing it inside a
year.

Thanks to all the people who have responded so far. Crossed the Advent
off the list...
We almost went for the Navman at Handtec, but have come across a Sony
unit (NVX-P1 Nav-U) from www.caraudiodiscount.com that looks a good
deal at GBP379.99. Any further comments?

A quickie for everyone.
Thanks for the input from various people, have just purchased iCN 520
on QVC for GBP299.28 plus 6.45p&p, in stock and in three easy payments
of around GBP99. Seems a bargain to us. This is a 'daily special' on
QVC, so goes back up tomorrow...

Doesn't the iCN520 need additional Europe maps ?. I didn't think you had a
PC to load them ?. |

I watched the people demonstrating it and they said the maps come on
CD but can be downloaded onto memory cards. So possibly I can load the
UK/France/Spain maps onto one card (they said it was possible) and use
that. My Acorn can do that at home. If not my wife can take it into
school and do it there. I'll let you know when it comes (sometime this
week).
Cheers

I think the maps on the CD are 'major road' level NOT street level.
