Garmin Etrex ext power |
|
|
Hi !
I want to connect my Etrex to an external power source. I know it has
to be 3 V, but I have a stabilised source of 3.8 V for the backlight
of a 320*240 screen, wich will be used together with GPS. Should 3.8
V be too much for the Etrex (for rather long use : 8-10 hours
continous) ?
Much thanks ! |

"eTrex needs 3V DC (specified maximum is 3.15V)"
I would not recommend trying 3.8V
A 3V DC regulator is available from an electronics store. They are
cheap, and can easily handle the conversion from 3.8V to 3V. There are
diagrams for a voltage regulator on the link above.

Some Garmin receivers have a very wide voltage tolerance (up to 12 volts)
whereas others (eg emap) are said to be fried by anything over 3.3V.
I have seen a claim that an etrex can safely accept at least 6 volts but you
would need to confirm that before risking it. Try a Google search and look
for something contributed by someone like Dale De Priest that really knows
what they are talking about.

New lithium batteries are about 1.8V x2 = 3.6V, I assume there is a fair
margin built into the system, so would guess 3.8V would be okay, but of
course it's not my gps.
