TomTom Go 300/700 Question |
|
|
I've been considering getting one of these things. (I should have a
long time ago, as I'm always lost, but that's another story.)
Looking at their website, I have one question. Under the technical
comparisons, I see that the model 700 offers Assisted Satellite
Navigation, whereas the 300 doesn't.
Just what exactly is Assisted Satellite Navigation, and do I need it? |

ASN is a facility that uses two accelerometers (one for lateral motion and
one for acceleration). These come into play when GPS signal is lost e.g.
Tunnels or other poor signal areas, to provide guidance information until
the signal is regained.
In theory it's a great idea, in practice it's not as effective as one would
hope. Certainly the ONE with the later SiRFIII chipset is a better option
for maintainig a fix in poor signal areas.

If you're just considering buying "one of those things" then have a look at
the TomTom GO One.
I have the 700, mainly because buying additional maps of Germany and France
would have been more expensive; Now I regret it because updating the maps
for all of Europe witl also be more expensive! |
