Anybody got any gen on the sudden rash of objectional "cookery tips"
that are suddenly infesting usenet? Its obviously a concerted attack of
some sort as numerous n/g's are getting clobbered.

No doubt this thread will get hijacked by the f*ckwit responsible, but
any info appreciated.

Happy New year to all the sensible posters on the ng.

They all originate from the internal network of the University of
Wisconsin ... it's either deliberate or, more likely, the result of a
virus or Trojan at their site.

The trouble is he's hi-jacking legitimate e-mail addresses to send them so
we cannot killfile without blocking the sensible posters. I'm looking at the
headers but haven't found anything yet.

The trojan is being spread around. I can only thank my lucky stars that I've
got a firewall that's working.

I've just had a thought. All those people that use the Internet as a link
between the their PC and Dreambox and have to turn the firewall off when
uploading had better beware.

If you look at the headers, you'll see that various supposed servers are
being used for the injection; however, SFAICS, these headers are
falsified.

More importantly, ALL the articles have a Followup-To header, which
directs any responses to news.admin.net-abuse.email.

The "point" of the postings is to lure the gullible into posting a
follow-up in complaint, and for that to appear unwittingly in the nanae
newsgroup: the poster of the "recipes" has a grudge against that group
(probably because he's been caught out as a spammer).

I'm pleased to see that you weren't so stupid as to fall for his trick.

David Wickham.

Should learn more about the DreamBox David or networking.

There's no open ports to the dream from the net
unless you are using cardshare.
All communications between the Dream and the PC
is done behind the routers firewall.

They don't, you know. The Path and NNTP-Posting-Host may lead you to
that conclusion, but the trace information supposedly provided by that
server is totally fictitious. Moreover, manifestations in other groups
have claimed to come via other, equally fictitious, routes.

If your newsreader has the capability to killfile on any arbitrary
header, then make use of the fact that all the posts contain:
Followup-To: news.admin.net-abuse.email

(Assuming, that it, that you don't frequent groups that might have
legitimate traffic with such a header.)
