I have noticed the last few weeks that on most channels the picture quality
has degraded to where the facial details are almost nonexistent, colors are
blooming, just sucks in general ....looks like DTV is using heavier
compression than in the past. It's not my system. I have visited other DTV
subscribers and they say the same thing. The local cable company must use
DTV downloads for their system because their picture quality is worse. It
bad cable video tracks DTV's. CNBC's programs have people looking red on
the DTV, on cable they are super red!

My cable was HD for over 15 years compared to the last year or so on DTV.

Anyone know why DTV currently has such lousy picture quality?

If your cable company is using DTV over C-Band it's pretty pathetic.

DTV's picture quality is worse than quality analog NTSC or good digital SD
ATSC. However, I've noticed the decline in the past months. Now every
channel looks like VH1 Classics.

Also, the sound has gotten worse as anyone with Dolby Surround (bubbling
surround content) can attest to. It sounds like your surround speakers fell
in the fish tank. Blubb blubb blubb and DirecTV's audio quality is done.

I can only speculate, I really don't know. I'm just hoping things improve
once MPEG4 is fully implemented.

It sounds like a problem with your TELEVISION SET or MONITOR to
me......it looks fine as far as DBS goes from my perspective. But then
again,I am watching SD material.I cannot correlate HD sources on
HD,because I have not upgraded yet.I am waiting for the MPEG-4
receivers to become broadly available and broadcast in my area.

Sorry but you didn't read my post correctly. Other DTV subscribers that I
vivsted and viewed their programming quality was as bad and they agreed.
also, my local cable company downloads and retransmits the DTV signals and
the cable picture quality is very bad! It's not my system(2 new SONY TVs
and 2 new boxes) or my fellow neighbors' systems!

Something has changed recently with DTV video transmissions.

DirecTV's picture quality has traditionally gone down a bit during
football season, because they begin devoting a lot of bandwidth to NFL
Sunday Ticket. Of course, there may be other factors, too -- I don't know
if they've added significant numbers of channels for other purposes, for
instance.

Have you noticed that most PPV movie channels are not available Sunday
afternoons?

There shouldn't be any degradation of major network programming since
spot beam transponder bandwidth is not shared with national NFL ST channels.
The local channels quality seems to vary by market according to some reports.

The national channels I watch haven't degraded recently. The picture
quality has improved on the channels I watch since 1999.

They greatly increased the number of Audio Music channels when they
switched to XM; and when they announced it I asked "Where will bandwidth
come from?", and now you've answered the question.

How many NFL ST games are broadcast at the same time? I'd guess that number
will never exceed 8 to 10. How many PPV movie channels will be off during the
NFL ST games? I counted at least 50 PPV channels scheduled with no programming
tomorrow during NFL ST hours. I rarely watch PPV movies but I can't recall
people complaining about not having PPV available on Sunday in past years.

The music only channels use far less bandwidth than channels with dynamic video.
Sports programming and some of the shopping channels are not broadcast 24x7.
How many baseball or hockey game broadcasts are scheduled on Sunday?
Are NBA games played on Sunday?

One thing for certain is the local channels won't be affected.

Probably around 8-10 is the a good guess of the max number of NFL ST games
that is on at one time. However, they also televise in HD as well as a
couple multi-view channels. Any ST channel not showing a live game is
showing the score updates. So, while there may only be about 8 games on,
the feeds take a lot more bandwidth than that.

Yes, NBA is on Sunday too. Actually, Sunday tends to have lots of sports
on.

Hmm, I forgot about NFL ST HD broadcasts. According to www.lyngsat.com
information, there are 8 HD NFL ST channels from the 101 Deg W Long. orbit position.
Do viewers complain about HD NFL ST picture quality?

How can a multiview channel use more bandwidth than a regular channel? I'd guess
it uses less since there is quite a bit of static area.

The idle PPV channels probably were implemented to allow NFL ST HD broadcasts.
Idle PPV channels on Sundays began before XM satellite channels were introduced.

My dish "sees" nothing other than the 101 Deg W Long satellites, so my programming
is not affected by HD broadcasts from the other orbit positions.

If the recently added music channels required more bandwidth, they would use it 24 hours/day
including Sunday afternoon. I doubt they consumed a significant amount of additional bandwidth.

The OP said nothing about Sunday.

Someone said "... because they begin devoting a lot of bandwidth to NFL Sunday Ticket."
Were you not satisfied with that response? That someone wasn't me.

I haven't seen any degradation in picture quality on local channels or national channels
since or before the XM satellite channels were launched. I don't watch much sports
programming.

IIRC, you suggested that 30 additional music channels would degrade picture quality.
Picture quality might have been degraded because of HD NFL ST programming,
but it is not noticeable in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose market. Local channels
don't share bandwidth with national sports channels or most HD channels.
XM channels have been "on" for less than a week, so they are not the cause of "degraded"
picture quality in the last few weeks. What has changed in the last few weeks?

HD channels will use a lot of bandwidth, but few of them are transmitted from
the primary satellite orbit position where most of the XM channels are available.

If DirecTV was using "heavier compression" on the channels I watch, my DirecTV DVR capacity
would be noticeably higher. It's been maxing out at almost 35 hours for more than a year.
If I had a spare DVR, I'd record XM channels to see how much space they use per hour.
DirecTV DVRs don't do local compression.

Maybe the OP should clarify what is meant by "...in the last few weeks...on most channels".
Are you there, Bob Petruska?
