Using a Dish Network dish with a Directv box. |
|
|
Can it be done?
I just moved into a new house and the Dish Network dish is already
there but I want to use Directv.

Are you new to DirecTV, or moving from a previous DirecTV?
I moved into a place that had a Dish Network dish and some cables.
I bought a DirecTV three room system, free after rebate, installed.
The installer set the Dish Network dish on the ground, and used the
existing mounting to put up the DirecTV dish.
Later I moved, and took advantage of the Movers' Special. I think it was
$12.95 at the time. Looks like it's free now.

They shipped a new dish, I took my old receivers with me. There was
already a DirecTV dish mounted, so they used that, and I sold the new dish.

I just wanted to know if I could use the Dish Network dish that is
already there, without having to mount the Directv dish.

If it is one of the older 1 or 2 LNB dishes it should work. The newer
Dish units with 2 LNBs in a single housing (DishPRO) might not, since
they have an integral switch. In any case you will have to repoint the
dish, since dish uses 110 and 119 for the main feeds, while Directv
uses 101. |

For future reference, you might want to put (or repeat) your question in
the main body of your message. Some news readers don't display the subject
line when reading a message, and sometimes exact wording of a question can
be important. So, to repeat your question inline:
: Using a Dish Network dish with a Directv box.
: Can it be done?

It depends. Dish Network and DirecTV use similar technologies. What's
important isn't so much the dish as it is the LNB that hangs off of the
dish. Some Dish Network LNBs will work with DirecTV receivers, but some
create a "stacked" signal that won't work with DirecTV receivers, at
least not without extra hardware in the mix. I'm afraid I don't recall
the exact model names that are and are not compatible. There's also the
question of whether you need to receive more than one satellite position.
If you can get 100% of your programming from the 101 position and if the
Dish Network hardware is compatible, you should be able to just re-aim the
dish and it should work. If you need a multi-satellite setup because
you've got locals from a position other than 101 or because you want
HDTV signals from the 110 position, though, you'll need either a second
dish or a DirecTV oval dish (or both).
Overall, if you're comfortable adjusting the dish you've got, you might
as well try it. If not, or if you don't want to bother, call DirecTV and
they'll send an installer out with a new dish, I believe at no charge.
