Well, I've been researching this for quite some time and I have no idea
which unit I should get.
First off let me say I'm looking for a unit primarily for in-car use. I
would however like to use it on foot occasionally but if I am going to have
to make huge comprimises in an in-car unit for one that will work decent on
foot I'd rather just have a better in-car unit.
My limit is about $450 maybe $500.

I looked at the Magellan Roadmate 300, the Garmin Quest and Quest 2, the
NavMan iCN 510.
It doesn't have to hold the entire US either, I need mainly new england and
maybe some other areas of the east coast.
I have been seeing a lot mixed reviews on every unit out there and its
making my decision very difficult.
The one reason I considered the Quest models is because of the on-foot
capability. I don't think the Roadmate or NavMan do that.

I was wondering what you would recommend for a good in-car GPS under $500
thats easy to use, with a nice bright screen.

Thanks for your help!!

You are on the right track with the Quest. There are a lot of great
car nav units out there now, but if you want a dual-use, make sure you
get a unit that features "autorouting" and make sure you get a unit
that is compatible with topo maps. The Quest it the only Garmin,
Mobile Electronics/Automotive unit that can be loaded with both
MapSource Topo and MapSource City Select. Garmin has other models in
the handheld category that also do both like the GPSMap 60C and 60 CS.

For more information about "which GPS" to buy I invite you to read:
http://www.travelbygps.com/articles/which_GPS.php
which has been recently updated with my choices for year-end 2005.

I hope this helps!

The navman 510 is essentially a PDA turned sideways and they advertise
5-7 hours battery so that's certainly enough for a day's walking
around.

I don't know if the larger screen (compared to the quest) is offset by
maybe reduced direct sunlight visibility because of it's PDA parentage?

Except that the iQue models can also and they are portable but not as
rugged.

I had similar needs and went with the Quest and am very happy I did.
Auto-routing and voice prompting in a rugged, waterproof, shirt pocket unit.
Mine survived a 4' drop to the pavement with hardly a scratch. It's also a
great unit to pack for air travel and use in rental cars.

All of New England will use about 2/3 of its memory and can be had now for
under $350. The Quest 2 holds the entire US at once but costs a lot more
and is otherwise the same.

The screen is bright and I don't find the smaller size to be a significant
drawback since it can be mounted high on the windshield, much closer to your
eyes than larger dash mounted units. I also prefer its buttons to a
touch-screen.

No it isn't .. firstly I've never yet got the battery life advertised on
-=anything= (usually only manage 2/3rds), and even if I could get 7
hours, I personally often walk for longer than that. Heck, my 60CS runs
for 21 hours with an external antenna, and I'm still carrying two spare
sets of AAs (admittedly my MP3 player eats them too).

Thanks for all the comments and info.
I have decided to go with the Garmin Quest for my first GPS.
It looks like the best bet for what I need.

Then I recommend you not buy a GPS that only meets Josh's requirements
and
not your own, however he said primarily in car with on foot
occasionally, no
mention of 21 hour hikes. 5-7 hours is Navman's claim not mine, salt
to taste.

Not sure what you mean but "no it isn't"

I meant 'no it isn't' w.r.t. 'certainly enough for a day's walking',
unless you have remarkably short days. Yes, it may be enough for the OPs
requirements, or a short hike, but it is not correct to say 'that's
certainly enough for a day's walking'

Not sure what you mean but "no it isn't" it's got the same processor
and
running a windows operating system with a stripped down interface and
has a
stylus and has roughly the same thin shape as pda so it's closer to a
PDA
then it is a camping GPS (i.e. "essentially")

It may not be the quest but it's a step ahead of the RM300 for walking
around.

I guess it depends on how you use it, if I'm sightseeing around a
strange city I'd tend to have it turned off when I wasn't refering to
it (ie museium, sporting venue, restarant etc..)
