Hello group,

Having recently purchased a mini-laptop/tablet PC (Dialogue Flybook) I am
not too keen on paying again for a Pocket PC to run a Satellite Navigation
system. I would prefer to use a nice clear 8.9" touchscreen rather than the
very small screens that Pocket PCs use.

Does anyone know of Sat Nav software that is designed to run on Windows XP?
I suppose it is necessary to consider whether this software would actually
cost me more than the usual Pocket PC/Software combination usually sold.

Also, once I have the software, can I use any GPS receiver or is there some
compatibility issue to consider?

Many thanks in advance.

Tanel.

"CoPilot Live | Laptop 8 transforms your laptop or Tablet PC into an
advanced GPS nav system. Receive spoken, turn-by-turn directions to any
address. With a brilliant 3D map display to guide you and the ability to
detour around sudden traffic, you'll never leave home without your
CoPilot."
Haven't tested this software, so this is not a recommendation or
endorsement.

Software only: $199. They have a few bundles that include a GPS
receiver, but none of them seem to have the new SirfStarIII chipset.

As long as the GPS receiver can be connected to the Tablet PC (I
recommend Bluetooth over USB, and let's not speak of other serial wired
connections) and it delivers NMEA-compliant data, you're good.

I recommend Bluetooth-connected receivers with the SirfStarIII chipset.
Bluetooth, because wires are a pain in the ass; SirfStarIII, because it
makes older hardware look like mere novelty items.

It costs around $50 bucks.. For $120 you can get the software
bundled with a USB GPS mouse.. You plug the mouse into your tablet
and you're in business.

The included GPS (iGPS 360 from Pharos) receiver is junk. I have one...

Microsoft Streets and Trips runs on Microsoft Windows XP..

No automatic re-calculating of the route when you missed a turn.

They've included this with 2006..

It also does dynamic waypoint re-calculation.. If you see something
interesting that's off your planned route, you can 'drag' the route over
to the new waypoint and it will plot the detour for you.

Another handy feature they added was an auto-zoom-on-turn option.
As you you get to a turn, the map zooms in close so you can see the
intersection in detail.. Then it zooms back out to a wider angle
after you've completed the turn.

I must admit I don't know how good the included GPS unit is.. I've
never used one..

Just about every street nav software does that.

Well, you have to place it directly under the windshield, "with a clear
view of the sky", or it won't work. Neither will it work when exposed to
direct sunlight and dust. Can we see a problem here? In comparison, I
can place the TT Mk2 receiver under the seat and will still get better
reception than the iGPS-360.

iGuidance is another one

It seems your Ultra-Portable Notebook does not have built-in blue
tooth.

Go with any usb gps (with the newer sirf III chipset) unit and you are
ready to go if you do not want to add an USB bt dongle

for S&T2006
yes. there is no auto re routing
it only says with those robotic voice 'off route'
that is it and either you make 2 u turns or press F3
in terms of details and poi there is likely no equal (still need to
verify though)

Oh yes, just a small point which I probably should have mentioned - I'm
based in the UK. Thanks for the recommendations, but do they have UK maps
and postcode search etc?

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/oct05/10-06ST06AvailabilityPR..mspx

it is called autoroute 2006 for UK and Europe

"For those planning European vacations, AutoRoute™ 2006 will be
available for an estimated retail price of $129 (U.S.) for the GPS
version and $39.95 (U.S.) for the standard version."

I am not sure about postcode search

Cheap and easy.

Route66, Fugawi, Infomap Navigator, MS Autoroute, and probably others. Check
the feature lists carefully though as some features like voice prompts and
birds eye view which most people get on Pocket PCs might not be included on PC
software. I know these aren't present on my versions of some of these packages
but they're quite old versions, to be fair. The problem is that most people are
using PPC for in-car navigation and therefore most of the software development
effort in this area goes into refining products for this platform, so check all
the features you want are present (for me, the orthoganal view (birds eye) is
vital, voice prompts don't interest me so much.)

Anything that does NMEA will work with any of these packages, some packages may
support Sirf binary as well - if you can get this it is better as it goes at a
faster baud rate when updating the information. (And Sirf may have other
advantages as it isn't limited to a 1983 standard.)

Garmin's Mapsource is also worth a look, come to think of it, although you
would need a Garmin receiver to get the best out of it. No difficulty with
these on the secondhand market as older Garmins are relatively inexpensive and
you don't need the up-to-date features like colour screens when you're using a
tablet to display the results.

These are all supported in the UK and Europe, as they tend to cost about 25
quid or so, there's no reason to not buy the European wide versions, but I
suppose that's down to research.
