My Mio 168 occasionally loses the plot so to speak if I have been using
Fugawi or another prog instead of CO-Pilot.

Yup. It defaults to COM2 when the software is installed and I've
flicked it back and forth between COM1/2 to try to provoke some sign
of life, the same with the baud rate, and turning GPS off/on but none
of it makes any difference.

It may be worth reporting the situation to Navman, even though DABS are

I do find myself very irritated by companies that do not provide an
instant solution. If I had bought this from a shop I could already
have a replacement unit or refund by now. The whole "contact us
electronically" scenario is very frustrating when you have no ability
to chase progress or even see the status of your problem. I suppose
that's the price of buying cheap!

Possibly.
That's a very poor CS strategy. Creates the impression that a higher than
otherwise percentage of ships is a faulty unit.
Hopefully you will get a new one in return and that will work. Dabs, did you
say? Maybe they're listening... ;) |

I know it may sound daft but have you made sure the aerial is folded up as
there seems to be a switch on mine, ie it will not work at all untill it is
unclipped. I appologise if this is stating the obvious but you never know ?.

As per the manual the GPS is set to COM2 and 4,800 baud (defaulted to
that in any case) and I've unticked and reticked the "enable GPS2 box.
I've left the thing in a south facing windows overnight, with power
supplied and still nothing by morning. I've taken it for a 20 minute
walk and also nothing.
I've tried multiple hard and soft resets and reinstalls but nothing
works. I also note that on the original software (3.0.0.42) the GPS
screen sits there doing nothing but when I run the updated version
(3.0.0.54) from the web the same screen starts to blank out after a
couple of minutes like there is a video memory corruption or
something. This seems repeatable - old version just does nothing, new
version just erases the screen.
I also note that when I start the GPS application/screen there is no
status message. If I untick the GPS box I get a "port closed" message.
If I re-tick the GPS box I then get the message "no gps data". So I
guess there is something going on vaguely there, even if not much.
Apart from the GPS malfunction the rest of it all seems fine. I have
an email into Navman but await a reply and am hoping someone here has
some ideas.

On all occasions I have had the built in antenna unfolded/extended and
angled either flat or vaguely towards the sky above the equator, where
I understand the satellites hang out.
I got a reply from Navman yesterday saying the unit would need to be
RMA'd but by the time they replied it had already been picked up by
Dabs' courier for return and refund.

I have a Navman Pin/Mitac Mio 168, I ran the system first and made sure it
worked OK before adding any updates.

I found 9600 much better ...

Strange thing ... My unit wouldn't find any satellites yeasterday or today,
dropped down to 2400 before connections established, then back up to 4800
and it's working well, but won't 'see' anything now at 9600 ...
I dunno if the Merkins do maintenance on the satellites .... ;)

They do but that won't have been the cause. |
Maintenance and failures are notified with the Notices Advisory to
Navstar Users. The current NANU is available here:

It is possible that you have some oscillator drift, this may be a factory
misalignment or the result of mechanical injury to the unit intransit or in
your possession. This will make it difficult or impossible for your unit to
aquire a satellite. Not all units provide you with an error mesage to this
effect by way of a system self check. Might be worth looking at if all else
fails. |

Final update - I got a no quibble refund from Dabs so that's sorted
without too much pain. The Navman was actually for a friend, not for
me. I've now replaced it with a Navman PiN 570 from Currys but that is
staying shrinkwrapped till Xmas.
I've now bought myself a Holux GPSlim236 Bluetooth Sirf III jobby for
use with TTN5.21 on my WM5 PDA/Phone and that is getting a *good*
signal from up to 10-11 satellites from the same window, 6 satellites
from within the bowels of my living room and 3-4 satellites if I plonk
myself between it and the window, completely blocking line of site to
anything other than walls, floors, ceilings and the roof. There are
several other weaker signals too
I haven't taken it for a test drive yet but for £75 delivered from
eBay (less £6.50 cash back discount from Paypal) I am very happy with
my new purchase. I just hope the new Navman works better than the last
one.
