Hi,

Considering either the Garmin eTrex Legend or the Magellan eXplorist
210. The main use would on the golf courses in the uk and being
completely new to gps I am looking views on the plus and negatives on
the units or other models which maybe suitable in the same price
bracket? There seem to be very few reviews on gps for golf usage.

TIA

Don't know of any commercially available maps that would be suitable
for golf courses for either of these. But, especially if you get the
Garmin, you may be interested in this site on creating your own custom
maps. The example illustrated is even of a golf course:

I don't know what you're going to use GPS for on golf course (unless you

really hit deep into the woods....)

I have eTrex Legend - awesome "first GPS". Can use it to mark
waypoints - "get back to car" when hiking, etc. It has on-board
mapping - but the maps are small and hard to read.

Also comes with PC cable - can use it as a receiver to laptop.

Probably because no one can think of how one would be useful on a golf
course. What do you have in mind?

The PDA solutions are more suitable for Golf courses as there are
programs that have course layouts already created and also keep track of
scores and other things such as distance to pin and information about
the course itself.

Check my pda sites for more data.

thanks for the link, just shows how a gps could be used for golf. As
far as i can see garmin seems to have the lead at moment. Its also alot
cheaper than some of the designed for golf gps out there.

Is that what's been wrong with my game all these years: No GPS?

Drat, and here I thought it was my dreadful swing, Dale :)

Well if you buy really expensive clubs and really expensive balls you
will do better, or so the claim is. A GPS in golf is just like
everywhere else. It just makes the game more fun but be sure that no one
objects if you use it to figure out which club to use.

I suspect that only a GPS homing device in the ball, with the hole as
the target, would help my game :)

I've played on courses that had GPS mounted in golf cart - and they had

programmed the course and pin locations - so it was helpful getting
accurate "distance to the hole" measurements.

Maybe if you had a handheld and a map of all the green coordinates it
would be neat.
