Newbie Questions About GPS |
|
|
Hiya,
Can someone please answer these questions for me.
1. Is GPS subscription based? I mean if I buy TOM TOM or Garmin do I
have to pay some sort of monthly fee?
2. I assume that whatever unit I buy has to connect to a satellite at
some point to tell me where I am. What happens if the satellite I
connect to breaks? Will I have an option to switch to a different
satellite?
Thank you for your time and effort. |

The 30 or so satellite are continually transmitting signal... A receiver
tracking at least four of the thirty will give you a full 3D position,
velocity and time solution.

I'm just posting to see if you are the same LostInTheWoods which posts on
various motorsport forums? :-p
As for your questions, No, GPS is free to everyone in the world. Unless the
US government changes it's mind of course ;)
The unit connects to several different satellites, not just one. 4 sats are
needed for a proper fix, however the GPS will keep track of more than that,
often up to 10, so if you loose sight of one there are others, this is all
done automagically without you knowing about it. |
