Install more than one garmin topo cd |
|
|
I have map source US topo v3.02. Every time I want to view
Topo East on my computer, I have to insert the topo East CD
into my computer. The installation CD did not give me the option of a full
Installation and there were 3 cds. My computer has 30 gigs available so
computer memory is not the issue. How can I install the Topo East cd so I
do not have to insert the cd into the computer every time? The installer cd
did not give me the option. Thanks |

I've done this .. but do not recall how.
One thought: Copy all CD files to HDD and try to install from there. |

Copy files to HDD and then edit the registry settings to point at the new
locations.
Registry settings will be in the product key in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource under either Families or
Products. Best way to find the relevant entries is to click on the root of
the Garmin registry key in Regedit and search for the drive letter of your
CD drive.

If you confine your fiddling to the part of the registry containing Garmin
settings then the worst that can happen is that you will have to reinstall
Garmin applications and/or products.
I don't have a product that runs from CD but each Garmin mapping product
writes the location of its files into various values in the registry. There
will be values for the location of the database (.tdb) file "Tdb", the
overview .img file "Bmap" and the folder containing all the .img files
"Loc". For MetroGuide europe there are also values containing file paths
"DataInstallDir", "IDX" and "MDR" - the last two giving the locations of
EuroMGv6.mdx and EuroMGv6_mdr.img.
If you open the registry editor (type regedit in the Run dialogue) you will
see that the registry is arranged like a filesystem in a number of "hives"
all starting with "HKEY". The one you want is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", which
contains global settings common to all users. (Individual user settings,
including your personal Garmin MapSource settings, are stored under
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER"). You drill down through the registry levels by
clicking on the "+" boxes exactly as you would with the folder structure in
Windows Explorer. For a MapSource product you need to navigate down to
Software\Garmin\MapSource under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Depending on the
product, settings may be under "Families" or "Products" - on my machine
third party maps created with cGPSMapper are listed under "Products" with
only Bmap, Loc and Tdb values containing file location information.
European MetroGuide v6 is listed under "Families" with DataInstallDir, IDX
and MDR values and Bmap, Loc and Tdb are stored below in a separate subkey
(called simply "1" in my registry).
All the values for your map product will contain filepaths pointing to
locations on your CD drive - you can safely move the data files anywhere you
like so long as you edit the registy values to point to the new file
locations. As I said before, the easist way to find these values is to open
the registry editor at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Garmin and search for the
drive letter of your CD drive "D:\" in my case (Edit -> Find or Ctrl+F).
The name of the next value containing this string will be highlighted and
you can edit the value by double clicking the name, modifying the Value data
to contain the correct file or folder address and clicking OK. Move on to
the next value using Edit -> Find Next (or F3). Keep going until you either
get a "not found" error message or you get pointed at a value that isn't in
the Garmin registry key for your product (the full address of the currently
selected value in the registry is displayed in the Registry Editor status
bar). You may find a value "SourceDir" containing the address of your CD
drive (eg D:\) - that's where it's supposed to point (since it's the
location of the installation files on the CD) and you shouldn't change it
unless you have copied the entire installation CD to a folder on your hard
disk.
I hope that's clear enough! If you think that you may have done something
really stupid and screwed up some part of the system registry then don't
panic. Changes to crucial parts of the system registry are stored in a
temporary location and only copied to the registry files themselves when a
user (any user) logs in successfully. So turn off and restart your computer
but DO NOT LOG IN NORMALLY. Instead hit F8 when Windows begins to load and
then select "Last Known Good Configuration" from the menu that appears.
Windows will then ignore the changes and apply the settings that it used
last time it logged a user in. (In case you should fail to hit F8 at the
proper time it's a good idea to turn off Auto Logon ( if you use it) to
prevent Windows logging you on automatically, which WOULD of course keep any
changes to the system registry).
It's all much more complicated to try to explain clearly than it is actually
to do it!
Best of luck.

Remove your initial install. Copy all four disks to a directory (say TOPO) and |
run the install. |

So, uninstall mapsource topo, copy the cd content folders of the other cd's

to the "same" new directory? Sounds simpler than messing with my registry
(no offense David but after three days of reinstallation I'm a little shy of
messin with the registry but thatıs one big complete reply you posted so if
this doesn't work I will definitely give it a shot, and yes its complete).
Ya think it will work?. Thanks.
Make sure you copy all disks including the topo install cd1to the new |
directory, and then run the setup from within the directory, and it will
remember the location of the data files |

Indeed they should. US Topo dates back to the days when HDDs were
smaller and storing the maps permantly there was not feasible for many.
Now it is the only way to fly!

I don't recall how I did it (it was a couple of years ago). But I did
not mess with the registry.

I just did this and it was very easy. Found the items under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Garmin\MapSource\Products
The R&R and Topo settings were listed 1,2,3,6,7,8,9
In each of these folders on the right was found a loc setting that said
d:\XXX under value which pointed to the specific folder it represented.
(ie RR_US for R&R and the East, West, Hawaii, and Alaska for Topo)
I then copied the RR_US for R&R and the East, West, Hawaii, and Alaska
floders to my HD
I then changed the loc value by right clicking it and modifying it to
point to the folders where I placed the RR_US folder for R&R and the
East, West, Hawaii, and Alaska folders for Topo.
Now Mapsource is even better cause I hated changing CD's all of the time.
Thanks for posting this, what a change!
