DTV audio degradation??? |
|
|
Has anyone else have the audio on most if not all channels degrade in the
last few weeks? The audio is muffled, tinny with lisping.
Did DTV do something? |

Pardon me for questioning you, but didn't you post something a few days ago
about the video degrading as well? Do the two appear to be related?
I have noticed no degradation in either the video or the audio. |

I have DTV and cable(needed for cable modem) and now the cable has poor
sound. I had the cable tech over yesterday and he said the C band audio has
noise so DTV and the cable will suffer until the C band dowload is cleaned
up. Makes sense asCBS on both my DTV and cable is slightly distored on all
3 TVs in the house.

So only CBS is distorted? That is certainly better than having "all channels
degrade in the last few weeks". I haven't noticed any degradation in audio
on the DirecTV channels we watch. Not on local channels or national channels.
Audio on the recently launched XM Satellite Radio channels is remarkably good.
Much better quality than the now defunct Music Choice channels.
I thought broadcast networks in major markets were fiber cable fed to DirecTV.
That would preclude C band problems. Perhaps the cable tech was spoofin' you.

Your XM on DTV sounds better? Music Choice had far superior audio quality
at my house. The XM sounds far more compressed and the dynamic range is
just not there. Although the yak yak yak of DJs does make me listen less.
Re-introduced me to my CD collection..... Thinking of going back to
Comcast.. and I hate Comcast.. that's how bad the XM think is IMHO. |

Perhaps it is subjective. Those who are upset because of the change believe
the new music channels sound worse. I listened mostly to the two classical
channels, 834 and 836, with Music Choice. The other channel playlists were
not to my tastes. I'm enjoying more music channels with XM.
I haven't heard much "yak yak yak", because there is not much there. |

Jack, other channels have the distortion. I hear it on all 3 TVs, both
cable and DTV.
I'm sure everyone's hearing is different. Are you aware that DTV has been
subjected to thousands of complaints on the XM music channel poor quality?
They definitely lack the dynamics and depth of the Music Choice quality.
DTV owns XM Radio so there is no return. The whole world is going digital
which means more compression and clipping. Ever notice that DTV has no pay
for view movies running during football on Sundays.......not enough
bandwidth to put on both. I personally had great cable video/audio for 15
years that was better than the DTV video/audio for that last 7. The prior
15 years of cable was HD to me and everyone who saw it. Most programming
delivered to the cable head end was annalog, no compression. I have yet to
see a well detailed digital signal (DTV, HD, DVD, etc) that isnot soft
focused with lack of detail.
Someday digital TV will look good but for me it has degraded over the last
18 months!

Thousands of complaints? That surely is an exaggeration.

Only a minority is disappointed with the disappearance of Music Choice.
DirecTV sold their investment in XM Satellite Radio some time ago.

All High Definition programming is compressed, no matter from what source.
I guess you will never be pleased with High Definition broadcasting.

I am glad the channels you listen to are not bothering you. I wish I could
be so lucky. The music I listen to varies from Techno to do a work out
with, to jazz for background with company, to rock for myself when working
around the house. All have much more yak yak yak with the exception of the
jazz.. it is only some what more yak yak, but still annoying when it is
supposed to be background music..
As far as the music audio quality.. it is quite a bit less then Music
Choice. It is easy to hear the difference. I have Sirius radio as well and
when I would switch back and forth between that and Music Choice, the MC was
so much richer sounding. It had a lot better dynamic range and a smooth
bottom end. Now when I switch from Sirius to the DTV XM.. the Sirius
actually sounds as good and some times better. It never sounded better then
MC. Never! This is compared on the same system.
I called the DTV customer service and the person I talked to actually did
cop to a lot of complaints. As a matter of fact it was one of those things
were you hear it in their voice that they just don't want to listen to
another complaint about the same thing. I am still thinking about biting
the bullet and switching to Comcast.. |
