Do 'most' watch Sky? There's an easy answer to that if the programming
upsets you.

It's a bad day when a 'non national' can own a section of a counties
media and then directly affect the outcome of that counties politics
[1] through his ownership, at one time there were strict laws on
media (mostly press) ownership in the UK to prevent such a thing
happening, and as television has far more power than newspapers I
truly believe that such restrictions should be reintroduced...

[1] cite the various front pages of 'The Sun' newspaper, over the
years, as election day looms - how many remember the 'light bulb'
made out of Neil Kinnock's face with the tag line suggesting
something like "Will the last person to leave the UK please turn the
lights out" or the front page after one election when 'The Sun'
proclaimed that "It was the Sun that won it".

I'm still of the opinion that delivery should be taken out of the
hands of Murdock, even taking into account the BBC / ITV plans,
Murdock should have to choose if he wants to be a programme maker or
distributor - I see to many conflicts of interest to be in charge of
both.

sky dont own any satellites.
the delivery is in the hands of astra - anyone can start a service on
astra - just like sky did.

Who'd want to take pictures with a phone? Who'd want to pay to make their
phone play a tune instead of ringing? Who'd want to fit their entire record
collection into a matchbox, then provide it with a remote control not much
smaller than the box? Personally, I'd never have guessed many of the mad
things that people are doing with technology now. The rule seems to be that
once a thing becomes possible, then however stupid it is, people will want to
do it. One popular use of mobile phones amongst my workmates at the moment
appears to be the exchange of pornographic video clips by bluetooth. I don't
recall the comic book heroes of the 1950s ever using their little writwatch
video communicators for that.

And what would prevent Mr Branson from starting his own satellite service? If
he's is rich and motivated enough to set up an airline, then I don't see why
he couldn't manage a satellite TV service too.

Agreed. It's too big a monopoly to apply to something so important.

No, the delivery is in the hands of BSkyB, the owners of the Astra
satellite only relay what is sent via the up link, they have no
control over content.

- anyone can start a service on

astra - just like sky did.

That is what I was suggesting!...

yes but.... you're kind of suggesting that because nobody else has bothered,
this means sky should have theirs taken off them and have bits sold/given
away to others who are not willing to do what sky did - they invested a lot
of money and were in the red for a great many years.

A lot of people do seem to, though I don't have Sky at all. I don't
approve of such an extreme monopoly, and I have heard some disturbing
stories of how the company treats their staff.

What happened to the merger between NTL and Telewest? Does this mean that
Telewest will be rebranded as Virgin Cable?
