Second hand box, existing card, authorisation? |
|
|
Maybe I'm wrong (maybe!!!), but I didn't think an existing Sky card could
be
placed willy-nilly in any digibox.
I've just picked up a second hand Pace 2600C1; and very nice it is too. My
old Pace 2200 was starting to show it's age (sorry Jim - but it's been a
super little workhorse). I plugged the new box in tonight, inserted the
sky
card and found it knew what my subscription was straight away. No
irritating
phone calls, nothing.
Is this normal? Or am I in for a surprise over the weekend when the card
wakes up and notices it's in a new home?

Yes it's normal...but it won't work for some of the "premium" channels,
certainly not PPV. So, you might want to check that you have everything
you've paid for.

You are wrong.
All cards work in all boxes except for the premium (sport and films)
channels and a couple of others.
For any permanent box change you should always contact Sky and get the
card married to the new box.

Thanks, Irma, Jomtien; as I don't subscribe to any premium channels,
just the base package, that explains it. But I'll phone Sky today on my
whizzy new VOIP setup and get them to marry the card and the box.

Its only really a problem for sports/movie channels, however its
better to talk to Sky as they can command the card ro only
work in the box its mated to overnight as they did before and after
the recent card change. At that time even ITV would only work
with the correct card/box
The current generation of Pace boxes are good, some of the
intermediate ones were horrid for this area.
How is it performing re ch4/5 ?

Be prepared for a LONG wait, I was on hold for 35 minutes changing one
over on Wednesday. For the first time EVER the woman on the phone
insisted I did a call back?, she insisted that this has always been a
requirement for changing cards over?, this has NEVER been the case, but
she wouldn't do it till I did a call back - which was no problem,
because I was inches away from a phone lead (on a different line).
She also told me that the call back was a requirement to prevent boxes
being used outside the UK!.
BTW, the mention of Pace boxes in this thread just reminded me, Pace
have ceased production of Digiboxes - apparently temporarily, due to a
world wide shortage of a particular component - we've had to have
Thompson ones instead!.

So far, so good. The speed of response is firghteningly quick, and channel
five is no longer a mystery to me. Channel Four was coming in with
intermediate blockiness at 8p.m. last night, but by 11 o'clock, it was fine
(? scratches head - do Sky boost the signal when the UK is covered in storm
clouds, perhaps?). ITV2,3 and 4 are all crystal, and after about 6 p.m. I
wasn't getting them at all. Seems like a nice little box.

Interesting, Nigel. But "Ian" asked for my 'phone number and I refused to
give it; on the same grounds as always - the only person who answers that
phone in the day time would be my father, and I don't want him hassled. The
only time they got funny about it, I reminded them of the occasions when
they would phone him up during the change-over to digital, to thank him for
his order, and say they'd be round on Thursday to upgrade him; after I'd
elected to let the subscription lapse. Bunch o' crooks.
Anyway, they wanted various bits of information which I had to hand, and
seemed more interested in asking my opinion of my VOIP router because he saw
one in Currys that looked good ;-) and it all went off without a hitch.
FWIW, having got the VOIP router working, I've registered with Draytel, and
once you divvy up £10 call credit, they will give you a UK number, with the
STD code of your choice; free. (Presumably as a way of keeping you as a
customer in the future). But it does mean that in future, I can provide Sky
with a number local to where they think they're calling, and theoretically,
at least, no-one will be any the wiser.

Change "have become" to "are" and leave out "recently" and you're there!
