I am interested in displaying a straight line from my position on a digital
map to a distant feature. Then as I move to a new location, plot another
similar line.

I would then be able to identify the distant feature.

Does software exist that could do this. If not then a possible solution
would be to calculate a false track log from ones actual position and to
then plot that track. Producing more false tracks as one moved.

Initial bearings to the distant feature could be by a compass sighting. A
later improvement for vehicular use, would be to fit a rotating sight on the
dash and convert the rotation resistance of a potentiometer to an angle.
The GPS being able to supply the heading of the vehicle, and for math to get
the actual bearing.

Any ideas folks?

I've sometimes done this on my handheld GPS receivers. At point 'A' I
record a waypoint and also take a compass bearing on the distant
object. I then create another waypoint'B' by projecting it from my
location far enough so it's beyond the object of interest but at the
same bearing. Then I move to a new location and record a waypoint 'C'
there, again take a bearing and project another waypoint 'D' beyond but
in the same direction as the unknown object.
Finally I create a route from A to B to C to D and display the route
lines on the GPS screen. Where they cross is the location of the
distant object.

The "Project Waypoint" feature in ExpertGPS will do this.

ExpertGPS will read or import comma-delimited files of name, lat, long, or
tab-delimited, which you should be able to produce from some other source.
It will read NMEA logs, or you can download from you GPS, and batch from
there, whatever batching is needed.

The newer native file for ExpertGPS is .gpx, a well documented XML format.

Many thanks Peter that's a good idea. With my eMap, moving the pointer, the
screen displays bearing and distance to a point, so this would work.

Not sure if my routing 2610 can do this, as unfortunately the 2610 has lost
so much that is in the eMap. But I could setup the new waypoints and if
needed type them into the 2610. Crude but would work.

Thanks Peter,
Alan

That URL looks interesting and USB is supported.

Will it work with a 2610 as this does not support NMEA?

But your program requires having a windows machine running to work. Not
ideal in a motor. Another limitation of the 2610. But I'm working on that.

I have a number of maps that are calibrated for use on my Psions. Maps also
calibrated in GarTrip and for UI-View - a ham radio APRS program.

Is the format of your calibration files available so that I could batch run
a conversion from existing files to your format. I appreciate that I would
need to write the conversion process.

GPSBabel is a free, open-source, command-line converter program that
will take almost anything and turn it into GPX data.
