It's certainly possible to set up a realtime encoder in the states next
to a pay tv decoder and stream via the internet. BUT unless your ISP has
a nice fat pipe to the states to sustain a multimegabit stream of
anywhere from 1-5Mbps and you can afford the data costs it's not going
to be feasible.

If you want to watch US TV all the time then just go over and live in
the states, and that way you can be amongst all the other yanks that
constantly bitch that they have 500 channels but nothing worth watching.

Some experimenting I did is at
http://panteltje.com/panteltje/dvd/index.html
if you can accept lower quality (say 352x288, and that often is plenty),
you could drop to 300kbps for movies no problem.
Lower wit hthe latest codecs, wmv .. perhaps.
Normally, in TCP mode, confirmation of packets is send, and if an error occurs
it takes quite a while for that handshake and re-transmit to happen, and you
should perhaps use UDP.
Nothing some programming will not solve, and ISP (DSL)speeds will increase all
the time.
Was surprized to notice my modem now says:
Bandwidth Up/Down (Kbit/sec) 512 / 3072
There are many test DSL speed sites (use google) and it does not measure
that fast to the states...
Linux, transcode, mplayer, netcat,... maybe videolan ... if you can get it
working :-)
I like the pipes in Linux and netcat, it can do UDP too.
But why watch from US when much of that stuff is available, CNN brainwash,
CNBC, Al Jazeera can all be received here.

Foxtel gets the Fox News feed from tranponder 9 of the PAS2 satellite.
Sky News feed is received in Western Australia via transponder 88 of
Intelsat 902 and sent via fibre to the eastern states (assuming they
aren't just getting a direct fibre link from the UK. It's also repeated
via Asiasat 3S.
