Lately, many of the programs I record on my DirecTivo suddenly slow
down during a commercial, and then won't play the remainder of the show
correctly. Which pretty much ruins the recording. If I fast forward one
step, the speed seems about normal for ordinary play, but there is no
sound in that mode.

Is this a Tivo problem, or a DirecTV artifact?

The classic answer is it is probably the hard drive failing but ask
over at http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/ on the help forum. Good
news is that Hard drives are a fairly easy thing to replace and there
is still a $100 rebate on new D'TiVOs if you can find an R10 on the
shelf. The R15 is best avoided for the time being.

How old is the unit? What temperature is shown in the system info screen?
If it's too hot (generally above 39C) then it's possible the drive's
overheating. If it's an older unit that's seen a lot of use it may just be
the drive's wearing out. They do die, sometimes as quickly as within a
year. Heat generally tends to accelerate this. If you're comfortable
replacing hardware then one solution would be to get a fresh drive and copy
over from the current one. Or get a ready-made replacement from folks like
weaknees.com (or others). Or, if you're a fast talker, convince DirecTV to
supply you with a replacement to keep you as a customer.
