I am looking for a GPS receiver to connect to a PC via a USB port. I would
like to use it for traveling a via car and also for some surveying. For
the surveying, time is not an issue. That is I can take several reading at
each point and average them, or I can let the device sit in one position
for several minutes to hop fully get accuracies in the one meter range. I
would appreciate recommendations for the GPS receiver and for Software for
the notebook (Windows based).

Second although I have considerable knowledge of radio and electronics I
donąt have a lot of knowledge when it comes to GPS. So I would also
appreciate recommendations for books or other sourse of information on GPS.
The more technical the better and I am a mathematician, thus not afraid of
rigorous math.

Thank you,

JakeInHartsel,

I recommend a wireless Bluetooth GPS reciever, which will eliminate the
GPS to PC cable in the cockpit of your vehicle. A full size PC laptop
is also cumbersom and dangerous without proper mounting. If you are a
surveyor you might be interested in using ESRI ArcPAD which runs on
Pocket PC running Windows Mobile or Window CE.

I hope this helps!
