I just got DirectTV and I am already seeing issues. At times, my Signal
Strength is at 80 and I have a clear picture but at other times I can
have the same signal and have no picture. Is this normal? No messages
appear to TV (i.e Searching for Satellite). Is this a receiver issue?
This can go on for days on certain channels. Any help is appreciated.

More likely a wiring issue. Like a splitter was improperly used.

I'd first look at which transponders are involved. Each transponder is
different, and certain problems can manifest on some transponders but not
others. For instance, even transponders can be OK but odd transponders can
be bad (or vice-versa). If this is happening to you and you just look at
the signal strength on even transponders but the channel you want to watch
is on an odd transponder, it'll seem that you've got good signal strength
but no picture.

Similar comments apply to satellites. You might get good signal strength
on satellite "A" (101 degrees), but not on satellite "B" (119 degrees).

For information on which transponders and satellites carry which channels,
check this site:

You'll need to click the link for the satellite position you're interested
in. I haven't studied it in depth, but I don't think that listing includes
most local channels, which are carried on spot beams and so vary from one
location to another. (A handful of local channels are exceptions to this
rule, though.)

You more than likely have a bad connection somewhere between the dish and
receiver. This has happened to me several times and it has always been a
poor connection.

If you had a professional installer, I would call them and perhaps have them
come back.

It sounds to me like you are watching an OTA channel. Which channel(s) are
causing problems?
