I am considering a Garmin 76cs although comparable Magellan units have one
very attractive feature that I discuss below. I don't use my receivers on
the road much, usually in the woods in NY and New England. Here's the root
of the problem I'm having with making a purchase decision. A major use of
my GPS will be to locate real estate property boundaries from tax maps. In
my area, real estate tax maps are laid out using State Plane Coordinates.
I've read two excellent articles elsewhere on the Web discussing how to make
Garmins and Megellans read out in State Plane Coordinates; however, these
articles indicate that the Garmin will not read out in meters (which are the
units used on tax maps) whereas the Magellans will read out directly in
meters. To me this puts Garmin at a serious disadvantage for use in the
field. The articles I mention were written in 2004 and I'm requesting any
insight into whether Garmins today read out in State Plane Coordinate meters
and any other insights in the use of State Plane Coordinates and handheld
GPSs. Thanks in advance.

My 60C has identical firmware, so I'm safe in answering that it
works well. I can set it to User Grid and enter the origins and
scale factors for my VT State Plane 1983 Meters. Then it shows
position, waypoints, and trackpoints in that projection.

If you don't have it already, http://gpsinformation.net has good
articles and a spreadsheet of the origins and scale factors for most
states. Search there for "state plane" without the quotation marks.

Another option is to use mapping software on your computer to display,
edit, and create waypoints in the state plane coordinate system.
Unless you need the actual coordinates on your GPS in the field, this
may be an easier approach.

ExpertGPS with the GIS Option Pack displays state plane coordinates,
and will work with any handheld GPS from Garmin, Magellan, or Lowrance.
