New features in ExpertGPS 2.0 |
|
|
ExpertGPS is a Windows mapping program that displays GPS data from your
Garmin, Magellan, or Lowrance GPS over USGS topo maps, aerial photos,
and your own scanned maps. ExpertGPS now features elevation profiles,
new drawing tools for adding shapes and text annotation to your maps,
and a full style library that allows you to quickly draw roads,
railroad tracks, property lines, and other common map symbols.
ExpertGPS 2.0 has a user-friendly mapping interface, with Undo and Redo
commands and a fully-indexed help file with full program documentation.
ExpertGPS uses the GPS Exchange file format (GPX), which allows you to
share waypoints and tracks with users of over 55 different GPS,
mapping, and geocaching programs.
The GIS Option Pack for ExpertGPS, available separately, adds the
ability to import and export shapefiles and world files between
ExpertGPS and ArcView. ExpertGPS supports US state plane, UTM, and
lat/lon coordinates.
ExpertGPS 2.0 is on sale through the end of the year for only $49.95.

And the annual renewal fee for updates continues to be _zero_.
I have received beta release that contained features and bug fixes solely
for _me_. I bought the first release of ExpertGPS that cached map images
to local disk so that it could be used without a connection to the
internet, and I continue to update to each new release as they come out.
Version 2.0 is a new interface that I haven't gotten used to yet, and I
need some help in publishing my travelogue with a web-enabled GPX file, but
I have enjoyed ExpertGPS.
The only downside is that it is specifically US-centric for automatic
download of calibrated maps as needed. Topo maps are available for Hawaii,
but not aerial photos. Areas outside of the US need to scan and calibrate
printed maps.
Public Waypoint lists are freely downloadable for all 50 US states, and
several other countries.

I don't like it over the old interface. I have no idea why the change was
made. I don't find any interest in the "altitude profile", which seems to
be a default of sorts.

Aha, a customizable feature! I'll have to have a look.
Oh, that's already set.
I was just used to the three stacked window panes in the old version,
although if I hit the button to display them as floating windows, the new
and old look the same, I just have to open the views.
I have no use for the elevation profile of the tracks. Maybe I do, but no
more so than speed, or distance from start, or grade, ...
Some of the menu items have moved around, so it will take a few days to get
used to. Not displaying aerial photos of Hawaii threw me off for a bit.
That was my first use of the new version.
And there was something awkward about displaying snippets of an active log
that was broken up... it seemed like the topo display was going back to a
leg I didn't want, after I had gone somewhere else. I'll have to review my
steps there more closely.
I had both an active log and saved track covering the same travel points.
I saved the track so I wouldn't lose it as my active track filled up, but I
preferred the active track because it has time and speed, so I wanted to
cut it, and delete the saved. On the topo screen, it isn't obvious which
is chosen, and I had to zoom in quite a bit to get a distinction between
the two. MS S&T has a popup if a selection click is ambiguous. Some of
the fonts seem to have gotten awfully small. I went back to the track
listing, and hid all but one of the tracks, manipulated it, hid all but one
of the other tracks, etc.
It's a little new, a little different, but fundamentally the same and
comfortable.
I want to work up a fully featured GPX file with links, pictures, and text,
and I really don't know how... I'll be visiting some tutorials, and other
users' sites in the next few weeks.
