I'll soon be switching to Satellite. Any opines regarding the best deal
for the mid-tier, no premium extra's services? Looks at present that
Direct offers 155 channels @41.99/mo, while Dish offers 120 channels @
$42/mo. Seems like a no-brainer, but open to suggestions....

I just switched to direct tv after being with Dish Network for 5 years! I think Dish Networks equipment is easier to operate. I had the DVR with Dish Network and could only record one show at a time (and couldn't watch anything else, but could watch previously recorded shows).

I really liked with Dish Network that the remote worked through walls. That way I could have one DVR receiver and watch in different rooms. Direct TV said they had that BUT THEY LIED! They also told me they wouldn't charge me a mirroring fee for the second receive but THAT WAS A LIE ALSO. I signed up for the auto bill pay, and they took the first month out immediately without warning me!

Despite all of this, I am getting more channels and Direct TV gave me a second DVR for all of the trouble I got for the same price (Dish Network was charging me a "leased receiver fee".

I would HIGHLY RECOMEND going to a store that has both Dish Network and Direct TV and analyzing both. I would also say DON'T TAKE A SALESMAN'S WORD FOR IT!!!! GET IT IN WRITING!!!
