Dish Network & cable internet questions |
|
|
Hi all,
I'm thinking about switching to Dish Network fairly quickly. The local cable
provider is feuding with two of the local affiliates and has dropped their
programming. I'd like to keep my cable internet service if possible and drop
their video service.
Does Dish Network use existing house coax wiring? If so, can I utilize cable
internet along the same lines? Don't really want to run different lines for
cable internet and Dish Network unless necessary. I'd like to use Dish
Network on 4 TVs.
Sorry for what's probably a dumb question. I'm very new to dish systems.
Thanks,

In certian circumstances, yes it can, namely if all the outlets are
home run, and of significant quality to not attenuate the satellite
signal.

Yes for Dish, PROVIDED you have separate aka home run cables to the dish for
EACH RECEIVER. Cable will need to be of RG6 or better quality to be useable.
If it was recently installed it most likely is RG6 as RG59 the older cable more
widely used prior to DBS has for the most part been replaced by RG6 as standard.

If you have a home run for the run that goes to the cable modem no problem in
reusing.
As for using the same cable to carry Dish and CM. You **MIGHT POSSIBLY**, but I
suggest against it. Cable modem service can operate in the 700-886MHz for the
forward signal and could get interference from the 950-2150 range for the Dish
LNB output, plus the power signal that the receiver will be placing on the cable
will require DC BLOCKS on the cable modem splitter, plus the additional
combiner/diplexer/splitters to do this, and the associated loss could cause the
CM to no longer sync. I would suggest to put Dish on one and cable modem service
on another.
If you need to feed a TV to this location using one of the dual tuner receivers
and then feeding the OUTPUT of this receiver via the same cable you might be
able to do. Just remember you need to diplexers that support a zero loss return
path in the 5-50MHz area for your upstream cable modem signal, and as low a loss
as possible from 54-890MHz. Then set the receiver output to the lowest cable
channel it can that has a video signal on your local x-cable company. This way
you ensure your no where near the FORWARD cable modem signal from the cable
company. You also will want a filter that blocks all the lower cable channels.
Getting this all setup with good components with low loss to not interfere with
the cable modem will be more trouble than just running a separate cable for the
CM. |

Dish Network DVR hiccuping? |
|
|
I got a Dish 520 DVR about a month ago and it's been
working fine. A couple of days ago it started dropping
parts of recorded programs and delayed play. The missing
video isn't that noticeable, but the missing audio is if
someone's speaking at the time. Is this a known glitch
with this unit or is Dish having glitches in their
transmission? |

There is no 520. Do you mean 510 or 522?

If you mean 522, I see similar problems, but most of them started after
I got about halfway down in the recording capacity - somewhere near 50
hours left out of 100.
What I've found when you have audio-video sync problems is that if you
hit Rewind for 1-2 sec and play, the sync is back again.
It is annoying however, if you want to blindly tape this onto a VCR (or
whatever) and you're not aware of the sync problem...your recording is a
waste and you have to start again and baby-sit it.

I knew it wasn't the 522. I meant 510. |

I had a 510 about a year ago and had problems similar to what you describe.
I contacted Dish and they sent a new one to me and then I sent them back the
defective one.
