Mapsource 6.5 Beta Custom Waypoint Symbols |
|
|
I am usually pretty good a figuring out these kinds of software issues, but
this has stumped me:
"Provided the capability for the user to define up to 64 custom waypoint
symbols."
Would someone please post a brief how-to or a link to the instructions?
I use xImage to upload my custom symbols to my GPSr, I can't figure out how
to get the same ones into Mapsource 6.5 Beta. Thank you. |

First create a folder named "Custom Waypoint Symbols" (without the
quotes) in your "My Documents" folder (the location depends on your
version of Windows). FYI Windows allows you to set any folder as "My
Documents"--Google to see how).
Next, rename your current BMP files starting at 000.bmp (up to
063.bmp) and place them in the above folder.
MapSource will now see the custom symbols.
FYI the next MapSource release (I'm told) will allow filename prefixes
to be specified so you won't need to rename the files.

Interesting. You would think that Garmin's xImage programmers would
talk to Garmin's MapSource programmers so that they would put the
custom icons in the same place with the same filenames. They should
also release new versions of MapSource and xImage at the same time
to keep from getting out of synch with each other.

custom symbols with certain GPS models. Basically MapSource/GPS
assigns a different symbol. Garmin is aware of the issue.

Just so we know, can you tell us which models?
I use a 60CS with custom icons. I've been avoiding transfers from
MapSource 6.3 -> 60CS because it screws up the custom icons. It
doesn't sound like the 6.5 beta is any better.

Unfortunately Garmin hasn't got all their ducks in a row quite yet but
its pretty easy.

I suggested the same thing ;-) They're working on it. At least nRoute
2.1 uses the same location as MapSource 6.5 Beta (the 2.1 beta
didn't).

From what I heard, the 60C & 76C series and the Quest.

Not from that point of view no. Its been over a month since 6.5 beta
was released so we're about due for another beta or a full release. |

Well, in my WinXP SP2 there is a folder inside "My Documents" called "My
Garmin". Inside this folder is a folder already named "Custom Waypoint
Symbols" where reside the original little blue circle custom waypoint
symbols. After replacing them with my custom symbols numbered as instructed
by Stuart Middleton-White, Mapsource 6.5 Beta recognized them. Simply
placing the "Custom Waypoint Symbols" folder inside "My Documents" didn't
get it done. But thanks for getting me on the right path!
FYI, when I uploaded the waypoints from my GPSMap76CS it jumbled up the
custom icons, as advertised. I had to manually correct them (at least I had
the "batch waypoint properties" to save me some time.

Oops, my error in forgetting the "My Garmin" part. I'll blame that on
my bandaged finger ;-) |

No problem. Thanks, again. |
