Any way to get BBC World legit in USA? |
|
|
I know you can get it grey market from Canadian providers,
but is there any US program service that sells subscriptions
to the PowerVu feed on PAS9-16?
I remember reading a while back that they were looking for
US distribution, but don't know what came of it.
Barring that, anyone know of an online source for caps of BBCW
programming like Top Gear, Click Online and Fast Track? I know
the 6 or 7pm newscasts can be had from BBC America (which butchers
it) or PBS.
Otherwise, I may be looking into a grey market StarChoice system.
(The BEV transponder BBCW is on doesn't reach this far south.)
Thanks.

Not to consumers that I am aware.

TopGear may be on torrents (illegal internet download).

For now, that is the only option I know of.

Sean,
Not that I know of. I researched this question along with Canadian
channels and the Grey market was it. The only time I could find BBC
World is the time the PBS net would run it.

BBC World is available 24/7 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/
Of course, that is the radio broadcast and is in your choice of many
different languages. I don't know about the TV stuff.
Here is a direct quote from that site:
"All of the BBC's national stations (including the BBC World Service) are
available on the internet (rights permitting).
The best starting point to listen to the station of your choice is the
BBC Radio Home page.
Furthermore - the BBC Radio Player makes nearly all of our radio shows
available to listen to again for up to 7 days after broadcast.
To use the Radio Player - click on the 'Launch BBC Radio Player' button
on the right hand of this page."
I usually keep it going in the background while I am at my computer. |

BBC World legit in USA : maybe if NYC (where all US media is owned and
controlled) is wiped off the face of the earth...
I am afraid that this may be your only hope.
The US private mass media system is as tighly controlled as the former
USSR's, in the private media way of mass media control. The USSR had the
Tellyban, and the US has its Owlkayda. There is little one can do about this
censorhip at the moment but wait for one entity to collapse the other.

Or sub to Star Choice or Expressvu to get your BBC World.

I looked into CanAm for SC (Can't get Nimiq 2(3?) in south Florida, so BEV is out)
It would be like $30 a month once you factor in the brokering fee, and the
forced Canadian locals package (which is cool), but I do have a TV budget.
I'd have to drop back to AT120 on my Dish subscription, and I do like the
Discovery Themes and the Encores. I'm also still holding out hope that
Dish will add BBCW in the next few months or maybe even create some sort
of "world news" pack (even at 121 or 61.5) with stuff like NWI, DW, EuroNews,
CNNI, and BBCW. I'd pay an extra $5-10 for that easily.

Sean,
I have been with Dish since 1996 or 97 and in the beginning Dish would
add lots of new channels. But after they started the "local markets"
thing, they quit adding many channels. I have been very disappointed, as
many have. That is why I have my Big Dish and Star Choice. I spend about
$100 a month for everything. I love having so much programming. Don't
hold your breath on Dish adding BBC World. No one carries that in the US
as far as I know, except some of it is on the PBS stations. NWI is on
Direct and Dish has never added that either.

I've been with Dish since 6/97 and have noticed the same thing. All they
seem to care about now is locals. You'd think they would have hit a
diminishing returns point by now. Anyway, I'll switch to whatever provider
carries it first, even (shudder) cable. I'll have to look at how a
multi-tiered system works out for me otherwise. Maybe cable for locals &
internet, Dish for AT60 (120?), and SC for Can-locals/BBCW/TechTVCa.
My housemates might balk at that setup, but then they don't pay the TV
bill either.
Curiously, I sent Dish an email requesting BBCW and/or a "NewsPack".
I expected to get the standard "Thank you for your interest..." form
letter back that I've gotten on previous channel requests, but got
nothing at all this time.

Sean,
In the past, back a couple years or more, the CSR's used to take my
suggestions of new channels and send in to Michael in programming. By
the way the CSR sounded, channels like Goodlife TV were going to be
added in time. Nothing happened with that channel and many others people
wanted. Now you hear Charlie with all of his excuses, that no wants this
or that channel. The only way I see to get any of the new channels is to
start dropping Dish, but people wont do that. If his bottomline hurts,
things would change. But why do they need to? He has over 10 million
subs and counting. So many people are fed up with their local cable
companies in many areas that Dish is a lot better than anything else
they can get. For the money, Dish does have a pretty good lineup though.

All true enough, but time was when they raised rates they'd throw us some
sort of bone in terms of a new channel or two. It may have been a shitty
channel, but at least they were trying to increase the perception of value.
This year we didn't get squat. In fact we lost a channel because of CNNFn's
demise.
The (diminishing) optimist in me says that they didn't immediately replace
CNNFn with CNNI because maybe, just maybe, they're holding out CNNI for
an international news pack. Such a package would seem appropriate on Dish
because of all the foreign packages they sell. It would be a nice "value
added" type thing for people subscribing to FL packages. What's more, they
could stick it on 61.5/148 or 121 where they don't have to worry about a
space crunch.
But they probably didn't replace it because they just said, "Oh goody! A
slot into which we can put another local/ppv/shopping/betting chanel!"

Sean,
You are probably right on that. They seem to be more interested in local
cities and foreign programming than anything else. A nice news pak would
be great. But I would not hold my breath. I always tune into Charlie
Chat, but normally there is little I am interested in now.

You can get Starchoice Satellite TV that carries BBC World.
R.C.J. Inc. offers Starchoice to the USA. The website is:

As far as we can tell you are legit this way. WE CANT SEE HOW YOU WOULD BE
BREAKING ANY AMERICAN LAWS! |

Not directly, in a criminal sense, but you would be violating the
copy/market rights of US broadcasters and providers. |
