Yes, i.e. www.comkor.de offers a compatible 256MB card,
which works fine in my Sp3. 24 months warranty.
Rumours circulate, a 512MB card shall be in progress,
but new firmware has to support it.

As I noted earlier in this thread, there are some listed here:
http://search.ebay.com/Garmin-Data-Card
There are 32 and 128 MB cards there now that are not Garmin branded. I
do not see any non-Garmin 256 MB cards there so they may no be available
or not available yet.
I'm not a Garmin owner, expert, user, or even much of a proponent for
their stuff. But I have seen numerous non-Garmin data card offerings on
eBay and posted to the thread.
My feeling is that there is no profit in offering stuff that does not
exist for sale on eBay so I'm assuming the stuff is really available.

does garmin actually update bluechart maps? Or better: does the
government update their maps which are then turned into bluecharts?

Non Garmin cards seemed like a good idea before Garmin reduced the price
on them but after that there was too little of a savings to take a chance on
the aftermarket cards in most peoples opinion. I haven't looked recently at
aftermarket Garmin memory card prices but in the past you only saved a few
bucks by buying the aftermarket cards over what you could get the Garmin
cards for.

Of course they update the maps. There would be no other reason to offer
map updates if they didn't.

Yes, Europe and esp. Germany is very expensive if you look
for electronic devices or cars etc.
But those garmin compatible cards do exist and as there are
probably build in Asia or US, you should be able to get them
there for a moderate price.

I hadn't noticed that, but I'm not a Garmin user. I thought you had to
"marry" the unlocked data to a GPS unit by the unit's serial number.
Maybe the eBay sellers are saying they will fill the cards for you
either without knowing or not saying that it won't work on another GPS
unit?

Garmin sells some cards pre-programmed with maps, esp. BlueChart.
Reselling those shouldn't be any legal issue. But loading maps
from one of the CDROM MapSource programs onto a data card and
selling it would presumably violate the Garmin license agreement.

Many of the MapSource products don't use unlock codes. This would
include MetroGuide-USA/NA, MetroGuide-EUR, Roads&Rec, US Topo, and
of course the pre-programmed cards. I'd guess that those are the
map products loaded onto the cards you mention. I don't think any
of the products without unlock codes have autorouting, but the search
features would work fine. |

Just depends on which Maps are on them. If they were pre-loaded by
Garmin it would be legal. If they were not pre-loaded by Garmin they would
not be legal.

Ok, checked:
www.gps.nl sells original Garmin data cards and only
one compatible card, a 256 one, their prices:
Garmin original:
16MB 50 euro (== $ 66)
32MB 65 euro (== $ 86)
62MB 75 euro (== $100)
128MB 100 euro (== $133)
256MB 200 euro (== $266)
non-Garmin:
256MB 150 euro (== $200)
Compared with tnav:
16MB $ 40.00
32MB $ 55.00
64MB $ 65.00
128MB $ 80.00
256MB $125.00
Draw your own conclusions...
As for ebay:
- the prices there do not seem to be very competitive with tnav's.
- where pictures are available, they show "Garmin" on the modules,
it just looks like (expensive) second-hand Garmin modules;
- I think it's doubtful whether BlueChart data on non-Garmin
modules is legal, or even works (note: BlueChart is locked).
So, I don't think buying ebay-stuff is wise.
Thanks for all info,
