I have a basic Dishnetwork receiver that can send a command to roll my VCR
and record a show.

Is there a DTV receiver with the same function?

I know Tivo is da bomb-- or one of those new cliches. But I'd like to keep
the VHS format as long as I can.

So record to TiVo and just dump to VHS what you wish to save long term.

The standard Hughes used to come with a little infrared gizmo that would do
just that. But for the price they charge for the TIVO you can't beat it. I
liked it so much that I bought a second one. You can buy my old Hughes ( got
two) with the IR VCR blaster.

& 7 and can operate a VCR buy not a tivo- yet.

The RCA 486RH has the ability to control a VCR.
