Question on Fortec Star DVB/MPEG-2 Receiver |
|
|
I live in the Northeast US. I have a 7' dish and the Motorola 4DTV receiver
and a C/Ku band LNB. There is a lot of programming my 7' dish can't pull
in, especially on G1 and C4/F4 so I'm upgrading to a 10' in March. From
what I've researched, this upgrade should help considerably.
I am also considering buying a FTA sidecar. My dealer recommended
http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Products/Fortec-Star/Receivers/Lifetime-Ultra-New.
htm. This looks good enough, but quite frankly I'm new at DVB/MPEG-2 so I
don't know if this is good/bad/indifferent. I'm looking to simply pull in
the FTA material that's out there.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Hi,I have the same Cband setup as you and went to mpeg and never regretted
it.I have the Coship 3188 and Fortec Ultra. They are both blind search
receivers. One can move a small dish(Fortec) the other cannot.I have had
problems with my Ultra holding data and Sadoun told me to upgrade the
software in the receiver,(which the manufacturer says VOIDS your warranty.)
I might recommend the Pansat Blind Search receiver.I think on the forums
owners have mentioned they have less trouble.I believe the model is 2500A.
Good luck,Shep

Thank you for the reply. But at USD2500, the Pansat 2500A is a bit out of
my reach. I think I'll go with the Fortec Ultra.
Thanks,

Scratch that - the Pansat 2500A is only USD180. I misread the price at
http://4dvb.com/shop/features.asp. Do you know if this works in the US? I
heard it was only Euro-compatible.
Thanks,

It works anywhere. It fact not all,but most mpeg-2 fta receivers are built
with versions for more than one TV region, although most of them come NTSC
and PAL compatible anyway.

Steve,Make sure whoever you buy it from, loads the latest software for
you,before they ship it out.

The Fortec Lifetime Ultra is as good as any of the consumer receivers,
and Sadoun is a good place to get one new. I've bought several
receivers from them. I've owned a Fortec Lifetime (not ultra) for going
on 2 years now, and wanted to upgrade to the Ultra to get the blind
search function, and I noticed that they have them on sale now. I think
that there was a flood of them purchased for hackers, and now there are
LOTS of them around. When I saw them on sale at Sadoun, I decided to
check EBAY, and found them even cheaper there. Just bought an ULTRA on
EBAY for something like $130 including shipping, so they are getting
quite cheap. There are several offered on EBAY for $95, but with $40
shipping.
The Pansat receiver that someone mentioned, is essentially the same
receiver, but apparently with different firmware and a different front.
But the nice thing about the Lifetime and the Pansat is that they do AC3
audio. Ie some feeds have AC3 audio, which many other receivers can't
deal with. For example, the PBS feeds on AMC3 are all AC3 audio.
For even less money, if you want to experiment, and if you have a
fast computer, you might try getting either a Twinhan 1020a DVB card ,
which you can get new for somewhere in the $90 range, or a Broadlogic
card, which can be found on Ebay for around $40.
The nice thing about the Twinhan, is tha it can do not only normal
DVB, but also HDTV feeds, AC3 audio, 4.2.2 feeds, and also pick up
DVB/IP network feeds, such as the NOAA weather data, and other stuff.
You can also do all sorts of interesting things like streaming the
sat video onto you local network to other computers, or to devices like
a Roku HDTV box, etc, etc.
Just a couple additional ideas. |
