Using Landsat 7 Level 1-G Imagery in HDF Format? |
|
|
I posted previously about where to find satellite imagery covering N47°29'
W54°23'. I have since found Landsat 7 Level 1-G Imagery at 15m, 30m, and
60m resolution coving this area. It 's available for free download from:
http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/Landsat7/hdf/L71003027_02720000624.html
Unfortunately the orthorectified imagery collection (which offers TIFF files
for download) does not contain the area that I require, so I must use the
HDF files. Since I'm a real novice at this, I need help explaining exactly
how to view the "L1G" files. I have downloaded the HDF Viewer 2.1 from NCSA
but I can't figure out how to get it to display the imagery files that I've
downloaded. Is there some other software that I should be using or can I
just convert the HDF to TIFF somehow? |

Would something like the following image be of sufficient quality for
your needs?

Thank you, Gilles, for taking time to create the imagery for me that you
provided at:
http://www.gilleskohl.de/mardon/n4729w5423.png
I can use this image if nothing with a slightly higher resolution can be
found. What I had been hoping to find is satellite imagery that would cover
an identical area, at an identical scale to this topo map section:
http://www.justus.ca/gilles/islevalen.jpg
My plan is to frame an 8.5"x11" image of the topo map in one frame and an
8.5"x11" image of the satellite imagery in a second, identical frame.
My friend grew up on Isle Valen, which is now uninhabited, and I thought the
matching 'pictures' would make a present that he'd really like.
If I can not find a higher-res image of Isle Valen, would it be possible to
get a copy of the image that you provided but without the place name labels?
I'm curious if your image came from a public server or did you create it
from another source? Thanks again for your help! Mardon |

No sweat - created using NASA WorldWind:

The software and maps are free, but a good (broadband) connection is
required both for download (200MB) and subsequent use, as the tiles
are downloaded on-demand, just like KeyHole. Wasn't sure if your 1KM
resolution meant 1KM/pixel or something else.

You can zoom in a little closer in WorldWind, like so:
http://www.gilleskohl.de/mardon/valenisland.png
but the resolution doesn't get much better. You can adjust the zoom,
orientation and view to your gusto though. (Mouse wheel to zoom, left
mouse to pan, right mouse to rotate / tilt)

See above, only free resources used. The placenames can be toggled
on/off. Once you've downloaded and installed WorldWind, use the
following URL to go to Isle Valen:
worldwind://goto/world=Earth&lat=47.4929351806641&lon=-54.3843193054199&view=0.181638419628143
(If your email client does not display it as a hyperlink, paste it
into Start/Run)
The hires tiles will take some time to appear.
Btw., another idea (easily done with WorldWind) would be a sequence of
images forming a "zoom in from space" from the entire globe to
full-screen Isle Valen.
Regards,
Gilles. |
